UK ministers face pressure over gender pay gap reporting delay

Government considers shelving service again as figures suggest evidence of growing inequality

In the Guardian, surprisingly. But of course called the gender pay gap, throughout. Hmm

It's official name is gender pay gap reporting so you can't really blame them!

Totally agree it's not on to shelve it. There are a lot of arguments around how it works but the framing of it is that yes it is a blunt instrument but it's better than nothing and serves to start a conversation.

My industry has a 35%+ pay gap. There's no excuse as we have no back office/ shop floor type roles (often lower paid and predominantly female). So yes it is important information.

It really is the ‘gender’ pay gap. The government website makes it clear that employers should record the stats according to their employees’ self-identified ‘gender’.

So the report can be as late as it likes because it is corrupted anyway.

Yes it's always been self ID and gender But it comes from HR records when you join and I doubt many non binary people etc (how would they be recorded?) think to make the change.

But yes the point stands.

I remember a cartoon in ? with an all male all white board, and the person at the top of the table saying, it would be really helpful if some of you could identify as female.

That was a few years back too!

Childrenofthestones · 09/02/2021 23:56

That'll be the Guardian that had a pay gap of 10% last time

NiceGerbil · 10/02/2021 00:23

Oh really?

Interesting.

My company has just changed our gender records to self id with an option for non binary (on the recommendation of Stonewall apparently). I can't stand to think of how the visibility of women's issues is being lost in this way Sad

I told my husband this and he said I was being ridiculous... i showed him the stats on only 5% ftse 100 ceos being female and I showed him pips bunce, told him about Eddie Izard running marathons as a woman but getting film roles as a man. How self id, particularly of successful late transitioners can skew the data and hide the problem. He said I must have too much time to be able to know all this... I said he is a parent to three girls and should care about this, that we are disadvantaged by being smaller, weaker and bearing children that can’t be identified out of. The next item on the news was domestic violence, of course no one said woman but it was a woman interviewed who had to flee for her life. I am very disappointed, he is a good man and I don’t know why he doesn’t get it.
