Tokyo 2020 boss says women talk too much

in meetings

"Referring to his time as chairman of the Japan Rugby Football Union, Mori said: “Women have a strong sense of rivalry. If one raises her hand to speak, all the others feel the need to speak, too. Everyone ends up saying something.”

He added: “If I say too much, the newspapers are going to write that I said bad things, but I heard somebody say that if we are to increase the number of female board members, we have to regulate speaking time to some extent, or else we’ll never be able to finish. I am not going to say who said that.”

isnt there research that says if women talk the same amount as men in a meeting, the men think the woman have dominated the meeting or something?

Thank goodness men don't feel a strong sense of rivalry. I can only imagine the mess they would have made of this beautiful world if they insisted on always being right and always being heard... we really dodged a bullet there!

There's something about school children- if the teacher gives 50:50 attention to boys and girls then the boys feel ignored and the girls feel exposed and the teacher feels they are not giving the boys enough.

Bless! How out of touch and entitled do you have to be to actually SAY this out loud and on the record? I know many men think it, with varying degrees of self-awareness, but most know it's sexist!

I love that he's climbed down and apologised after his wife gave him a bollocking :o

In most meetings I've been to, in fact every meeting that wasn't women-only, men talk far more.

Everyone ends up saying something.

Errrrrm that's the point!

As I've said elsewhere today: gynephobia. It's the new black. All the cool people are getting their prejudice on.

This guy is a reprehensible dinosaur and really needs to go. Remarks like this have such impact. For example, I work in a male dominated industry and too often I am the only woman on the call. Today, for the first time ever, I found myself wondering if my male colleagues think I talk too much, having read this article myself earlier.
If he had made these exact comments about any other minority group, he would have been immediately fired. Why is ok to disparage women?
