This really has me half fuming, half laughing... is the implication that "the science" would now be adequate for a child JKR to decide to trans herself medically, but that, sadly, thirty years ago, we just didn't know how?

It’s a big enough lie that it’s taken on a life of its own and people just believe it uncritically. It’s appalling. I’m The Ickabog with DS at the minute, and the the parallels are all there. You can’t read it without thinking of this situation.
