Feeling a bit bruised

Gagh. I've been "discussing" transgenderism on Twitter and been called a stupid bitch etc multiple times, and I just wanted to come on here to lick my wounds a bit because I am feeling very shaken and upset right now.

OP posts:

I have never ever seen any TRA have their viewpoint changed by any interaction on Twitter.

I'm sorry, I think 'debating' just cements their stance/hatred further.

AnotherLass · 14/01/2021 19:59

You're looking at this wrong. It's the lurkers you are convincing. Quite a lot of people say that they were peaked or alerted to what was going on via Twitter. They saw one side making reasonable arguments, and the other name calling. It was obvious which one was the rational one.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 14/01/2021 20:00

I had to come off for my own sanity too, but it is good for connecting with other radfems/GC people and also for making you really think about the point you want to make and how to express it succinctly.

It won’t change any TRAs’ minds - theirs is a faith-based position that arises from an emotional need to believe rather than any rational conviction - but it’s good for honing communication skills that you can then deploy elsewhere.

Sorry you’re feeling bruised, OP - it’s an utterly soul-destroying experience, I agree. The people I know who use it successfully and stay on just don’t engage in those Twitter fights; they just get their message out there.

AnotherLass · 14/01/2021 20:06

A technique that I've found that makes dealing with Twitter TRAs much more fun is being sarcastic. They don't really know how to respond to it, and lets face it, their arguments are absolutely absurd. Mockery is the best way to deal with it.

MondayYogurt · 14/01/2021 20:11

I think mental health is more valuable than converting lurkers.
Social media literally makes money from addiction and conflict, eyeballs on screens. It may have benefits here and there but it's not worth any sort of mental toll. Not in these times.

10kstepsaroundthegardenthen · 14/01/2021 20:26

I only joined Twitter last year and deleted it a few month later. It was just not a nice place to be. I did get a tweet from an actor I admire though.

If I go back on I'll stick to @dailyowls and other cute thinks.

StrippedFridge · 14/01/2021 20:44

Mockery is good. Especially the "cop yourself on" variety.

The spegg, sperg graphic is a great one to drop in on the biological sex is complicated crowd. Then wander off. Your job is done.

I think the replies like "you are being ridiculous" are the most powerful. Too much utter bullshit is argued with, giving it validity. A dismissal in the manner of a harried mother who has no time for your shit works well.

I am convinced that many of the most argumentative anime tweeters (sex is a construct / puberty blockers for children is life-saving healthcare / trans people are all luffly and sex predator men could rape you anyway) are actually teenage girls experimenting with a trans identity.

Abhannmor · 14/01/2021 20:58

There's literally a world of idiots out there. Dumping Twitter was one of my rare good decisions! And discovering only 8% of the planet are on it cheered me up no end. No use arguing with loonies. It's everyone else we must reach. Take care of yourself !

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/01/2021 08:52

Twitter is cage-fighting in a cesspit. Being called a stupid bitch generally means the person calling you that has no facts to counter whatever you posted, so resorts to insults.

That's a great description.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 15/01/2021 09:45

Trick to Twitter is to limit your engagement with tje TWAW brigade. Arguing with them won’t change their minds, so I mute and block without worry.

I find people who interest me and follow them, amplifying sensible comments and useful posters. I’ll get banned eventually, so I take care not to get overly invested.

If you’re finding any social media disturbing, leave it alone.

ChattyLion · 15/01/2021 16:27

I’m not sure how I broke the guidelines to get deleted upthread. I’ve reported my deleted post to ask you, @MNHQ?

ChattyLion · 17/01/2021 21:12

How are you doing OP?
Hugs. You’re braver than I am.
Also, seeing as you’re not on the illogical, authoritarian, anti-scientific, sexist, homophobic, misogynistic, safeguarding-undermining, narcissistic and specifically woman-silencing side of this Twitter ‘debate’.. in all likelihood you’ve probably not been arguing against any individual person whose opinion you would particularly value if you ever talked to them in real life. Hope you’re feeling OK though. Brew

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 17/01/2021 21:47

I never bother engaging, it's always going to be the same old abuse. I do like posts of those who stand up to them (much more eloquently than I could) and report any particularly nasty ones.

Terry
Enjoying your turns of phrase as ever

terryleather · 17/01/2021 22:38

Thanks Milady!

Can't remember where I saw this, but it's a fabulously apt description of Twitter imao...

That's brilliant Grin

Step away from the cesspit that is twitter. It’s full of self important key board warriors. They don’t represent the rest of society.
