Very clear support for the biological distinction in sporting categories. I'm surprised to see a prominent Democrat so clear on this.

Always better two threads than none!

JamieLeeCurtains · 12/12/2020 15:29

I saw this thread first, and will look for the other one.

It's a relief to see a prominent Dem say this, and repeatedly.

I am so glad she's doing this. Sports is the issue that will really help this...it's so obvious the unfair advantage male bodies have against women bodies in sports. Even Serena Williams can't beat male tennis athletes.

Abitofalark · 13/12/2020 14:21

Thanks for posting a thread highlighting this development - though don't know what's the 'no, really' about.
It's such an important topic and gladdens my heart to see this happening.

I am glad she has spoken up, but she now faces the inevitable backlash on twitter.

And they talk about how toxic GC feminists are.... And I never see an activist calling this behaviour out amongst their community.

The 'real' feminists have spoken.

A lot of those people are suggesting that she change sides and become a Republican.
The problem is, that they still do not recognise why Trumpard was elected in the first place.
What a total fu**g mess, the whole political/social system in the US.
When good, sensible people are attacked, that is the time to worry.

everythingcrossed · 13/12/2020 20:56

Astonishing how many people insulting her use specific female anatomy as an insult Hmm.

The timing and the issue are interesting. I'm wondering whether this is a deliberate tactic by Gabbard. The Biden administration is shortly going to take over and they're likely to pull some stunts that will trample over women's rights in order to prioritise transwomen, and will be unthinkingly applauded. It will be seen as good and as paying a debt to progressive politics.

Raising this particular issue now, which is probably the best issue having a chance to cut through to the general public in terms of visibility, before the Biden administration can make a move, will enable people to see that some aspects of progressive politics are not fair and are simply bad.

I'm wondering whether she's doing a JKR: turning herself into a lightning rod for hatred so everyone can witness the spectacle and realise that something bad is happening.

McDuffy · 13/12/2020 21:40

Interesting theory, nauticant. I'll watch with interest!

I think thats a distinct possibility. She's released an extremely calm and fact-based video explaining the rationale for the bill. The calmer she is and the more she focuses on the facts the more deranged the TRAs in her mentions seem. She comes across as completely rational in the clip as she states:

Since the introduction of Title lX in 1972 there's been a 500%+ increase in women playing college sport.

Before title 1X 1/27 girls played sports now it's 2/5.

She goes on to explain how it has benefitted women's health and supports their future success in the workplace. She also mentions out that male born transwomen have a biological advantage (which let's face it everyone knows, really). Now she's being accused of erasing trans people, of talking garbage and there are the inevitable death to te*fs memes. The tactics are pretty tedious. I think her delivery and her emphasis on facts and science is a deliberate counterpoint to the hysteria and hyperbole.

nauticant

You really could be on to something. I was wondering about the timing myself. It is like a last ditch effort before finishing her time. Like this is the issue that was left hanging that she wanted to bring attention to.

Still the vile abuse is completely JKResque in nature. Hopefully, Biden/Harris team is taking notice of exactly who it is that is dishing this abuse out in the name of 'inclusion'.
