"A new generation of younger leftists have caught the public mood"

Was this said before or after the general election last December?

NotBadConsidering · 02/12/2020 22:14

I knew it would be Jones as soon as I read Moore’s article.

And yes “caught the public mood” means “a small number of us all agree with each other and we naturally assume - we don’t need to ask them or listen to them! - the rest of the left side of politics in the UK does too, and that’s why Labour are unelectable.”

TweeBree · 02/12/2020 22:14

Officially a bullying misogynist (not that we didn't already know...).

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 02/12/2020 22:16

But my sympathy for [Suzanne Moore] is tempered by the fact that I don’t understand why it took her so long to realise the Guardian was a misogynistic prick fest determined to dismantle women’s rights.

For a long time The Guardian was the newspaper for liberals, lefties and feminists. It still gives me a pang to remember how it was 'our' paper -- it seemed like a friend and ally.

I would have been proud to work for it, as i'm sure Suzanne was at first. And later, as it slid into student-level opinions and identity politics, she was still holding the line as lond as she could. That is also a principled stand.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 02/12/2020 22:17

"she was still holding the line as long as she could ..."

carlaCox · 02/12/2020 22:53

It was little Owen. The boy who never grew up. Quelle surprise.

Siablue · 02/12/2020 23:08

Was there a single person in the whole world who thought it would be anyone other than Owen Jones? What an arse.

Campervan69 · 02/12/2020 23:09

Everyone who is anyone is blocked by little OJ on Twitter. It's a badge of honour.

testing987654321 · 02/12/2020 23:12

I think she knew, but didn't see it as a reason to stop working at the Guardian.

It's not like there's any paper which is actually feminist is there? It's definitely a macho culture, that she's managed a career in it speaks volumes for her determination.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/12/2020 23:12

Next thing you'll be telling me that the Pope is Catholic

OJ is a horrible bully. Apparently though only he is allowed to pronounce on what a woman is, us vagina owners need to be kept in our place.......

Vargas · 02/12/2020 23:15

No surprise there at all. Misogynist twat.

carlaCox · 02/12/2020 23:16

It still makes me laugh remembering him lecture Janice Turner about why she can't claim to be non-binary and someone asked why it was that he got to decide people's genders. Reply: "He's the Sorting Twat".

donquixotedelamancha · 02/12/2020 23:20

I think she's been very aware of the problems for a long time but chose to remain with them and make the argument. I have nothing but respect for the women who do this in organisations all the time- in many ways it's a harder road than quitting.

I don’t understand how she can have ever expected Viner to stand up for her....or expected the Guardian to stick up for free speech & diversity of opinion.

It really is only very few years since these would be utterly basic assumptions about a newspaper regardless of the particular columnist's views. The expectation of the right (and indeed duty) of columnists to say what they think will be hard baked in most journalists over 30.

I had given up on the guardian but was a bit shocked they didn't at least pretend to value free expression.

Siameasy · 02/12/2020 23:27

Lol that he thinks these young wokesters have caught the public mood. You lost the last election quite badly and even your own people started eating each other

HecatesCats · 02/12/2020 23:32

Officially a bullying misogynist (not that we didn't already know...)

I still can't get my head around the fact that he has a twin sister. What happened to him?

nettie434 · 02/12/2020 23:32

My favourite description of Owen Jones is Talcum X.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3376903-Huffington-Post-Great-article-featuring-some-amazing-feminists-wherein-OJ-is-referred-to-as-Talcum-X

I don't normally like making jokes about other people but in my opinion he has encouraged pile ons against anyone who disagrees with him.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 02/12/2020 23:38

I wonder if she was compelled to stay by both the practicalities of needing a job, but also a sense of responsibility to The Guardian as a concept? To keep writing unpopular opinions because that’s how good newspapers should operate? And a stubborn reluctance to allow cowards and bullies to force her out.

HopeClearwater · 03/12/2020 00:04

Gold. Thanks.

Indeed.

Last week he was using his status as a public figure with a huge twitter following to call for Boyz (a free magazine that makes its income from advertisers) to be driven out of business. Vile.

Suffrajester · 03/12/2020 22:57

He's a neoliberal postmodernist, not a leftist. His whole brand is that he's left wing, but he really isn't any more - how can he be a dialectical materialist if he doesn't even believe in material reality or for the rights of people to organise around common interests (say, women and the way we're treated)?
Chinese communists have words for people like him, "baizuo". Basically means someone who says they're left wing when they're not, who wrings their hands and gets nothing done except distract and derail actual left wing organising, which of course only benefits those in power. You could say, he "identifies as" left.

nettie434 · 03/12/2020 23:14

I'd missed that one, PotholeParodies. He does so many. I took some comfort from what seemed like a lower number of likes and retweets. Maybe his star is waning.

Suffrajester, I'd not heard the term 'baizuo' but it really does typify him. The sort of person who glories in their ideological purity while rejecting approaches that would make a centre left political party electable. My pet hate are the Bernie Sanders supporters who told us Hillary Clinton was the same as Trump.

PotholeParadies · 03/12/2020 23:31

Owen Jones' wikipedia entry says, and I quote, that he "identifies as a feminist".

Someone being mocking there!

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2020 23:38

More precisely, 'Jones self-identifies as a feminist' and links to a piece he wrote in 2015 which he could do with re-reading. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/feb/24/men-women-masculinity-feminism

I’m yet another of the men who dominate the opinion pages of newspapers. Women’s voices are not heard enough. And when they are heard, they are taken less seriously than men.

I suppose he's making some progress on men being taken less seriously, at least.Grin
