non-men

I'm a regular reader in here but don't usually post in FC. But just read a tweet by someone involved in my industry to do with diversity in which he refers to non-men. So sick of this shit.

I run a work based account and therefore I can't challenge or unfollow. In principle I want to support this group this man represents to do with racial diversity in the industry but fgs. Non men is just offensive.

Why have we ended up in this minefield that means supporting one under represented group means by default we have to tie it to other groups and all that bloody mess?

I am perfectly happy to support anyone in a minority and firmly believe we should all be treated with respect and dignity but not like this. Why should saying the word woman be so hard and now a political statement?

Surely he would be offended if he were referred to as non-white? Can he really not see the insult here? Or is he just tying himself up in knots to not exclude the non-men non-women? Such is the mad world we now live in...
I also don’t understand the double standard of the languaging (new word) these days. If TWAW why is the word woman controversial?
The world has turned into some crazy Alice in wonderland Cheshire Cat riddle 🤯

This!

@Coffeeoverload I don't think its supposed to make sense.

In the Relationships threads I see a lot of mainly women talking about how their spouse discombobulates them by constantly changing their wishes and demands.
Its all a ploy to keep the victim on their toes and not knowing what is coming next and this is exactly what is playing out here with the constantly changing language and what is and is not acceptable.

Because, sadly. we live in a culture in which women are not regarded as fully human.

When I say this, people look at me as though I'm some crazed feminazi. But just look at the evidence - "non-men" !!!

TyroTerf · 21/11/2020 13:58

Women. Women. Women. You can say our name. We're not fucking Voldemort

We're far more powerful - Voldy only appeared when people said his preferred name. He couldn't detect people saying Tom Riddle or You-Know-Who.

Whereas feminists spring forth whenever we're mentioned and when we clock our euphemisms and deadnames.

Very wise woman, that JKR.

Whereas feminists spring forth whenever we're mentioned and when we clock our euphemisms and deadnames. 😂 love that, will now go and dig out my cape.

tbh I think your man is trying to be 'cool woke' and thinking things through may not be a strong suit at the moment

peppermintteadrinker · 21/11/2020 16:23

Yes @highame I think so too but I feel angry at being in a position where simply saying he's got it wrong would put me at risk professionally. Ironically the women's industry organisation that allies with his is so woke (and I don't really like that label either) that I really felt at the conference it didn't speak for me much.

@Tyro like the sentiment. That's true..though when you say we are dead named you mean..they don't use woman? I only understand deadnaming as using a trans person's old name of the other gender. Or do you mean that your feminism includes TW and that issue? I'm open minded and sympathetic to trans people. What I'm not sympathetic to is being told what to say or think and having women's real issues erased and labelled as bigotry. For a world obsessed with non-binary identities, we have gone extremely binary in our thinking.

Reminds me of Joey off friends when advertising for a room-mate 'non-smoking, non-ugly'

How the audience laughed at such a misuse of language.
