People with cervical cancer. Eve Appeal.

Eve Appeal is at it again, on FB:' Globally nearly 600,000 PEOPLE are diagnosed each year with cervical cancer and approximately 300,000 PEOPLE around the world die each year from this disease (....)'. I commented on their previous posts, I don't feel like getting into a fight with woke cervix havers again. I'm going to unfollow them now. Are there any women's health charities that still use the word 'women'? I'd like to support them instead.

Fucksake

Gncq · 17/11/2020 14:42

Mind you, I did just feel compelled to check my blood pressure and was HUGELY pleased to see the NHS still has it's head on.

People with cervical cancer. Eve Appeal.
Minty82 · 17/11/2020 14:44

Oh good grief...this is completely insane.

Smurftastic · 17/11/2020 14:46

Thank you for this Gncq. It's so infuriating. My hand is itching to comment on it, but I know I'll get attacked by the 'be kind' crowd in a second. I'm just so tired of it. Soon my daughter will not be a daughter but a 'future menstruator' Sad.

I just checked their website. Thousands of words, page after page of info — and I couldn't spot a single use of the words women or woman. It's quite a feat.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 17/11/2020 14:48

And it doesn't matter at all that a lot of women won't know what a cervix is or why it should concern them ....

Greencoatblue · 17/11/2020 15:02

I'm so tired of UK organisations dealing with female health conditions using the term people, while those dealing exclusively with male conditions use the terms men/male. Prostate cancer and Orchid Male Cancer Awareness come immediately to mind, but I'll bet there are loads of others. Can anyone identify a charity/organisation that refers to people with a penis/prostate/testicles for example? There are fistula charities that refer to women throughout, but they work in less privileged countries where they absolutely know what a woman is, and that comes down to biology not feelings.

PurpleHoodie · 17/11/2020 15:09

The Eve Appeal may as well just turn themselves over into being a prostate cancer charity.

It means the privileged women (ironic) running the place still have a worthy "charity job" to put on their CVs for polite society dinner party chitter chatter. Or they could get a real job.

They really don't care about other women anymore.

aliasundercover · 17/11/2020 15:13

I couldn't spot a single use of the words women or woman

Woman is used a couple of times: "We asked an older woman ...", etc.

However, on the "How do gynae cancers affect men?" page the word 'men' is used 8 times - that's certainly more than the word "woman" is used on the whole site Confused

Mikamee · 17/11/2020 15:14

Funny how it’s never ‘people with prostate cancer, people with testicular cancer’ isn’t it?

CurbsideProphet · 17/11/2020 15:15

On 6th November they posted about the late Betty Dodson and describe her as spending her life and career "breaking down the taboos around women's bodies..."
Interesting they could use the word woman there without reducing us to "people who have a cervix" 🤔

Smurftastic · 17/11/2020 15:50

I almost unfollowed them after the first time they wrote about 'anyone with a cervix', but the silver lining is that it was a breakthrough moment for me. Now I just despair. Is there any charity left? Is there a point leaving any comments there?

Backbee · 17/11/2020 15:55

FFS, it is infuriating.

Mumsnut · 17/11/2020 15:57

Pretty ironic , the name ‘Eve Appeal’. Shouldn’t it be Adam and Eve?

niceberg · 17/11/2020 17:59

Shame on the Eve Appeal. Foolishly I've defended them on here before but no more. To consciously eradicate the word woman while taking women's hard earned cash, let alone money from families mourning the loss of beloved women in their families is just repellant.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/11/2020 18:26

Was it not them who did the survey that found out many many women don't know they possess a cervix?

littlbrowndog · 17/11/2020 18:27

45% don’t know

littlbrowndog · 17/11/2020 18:28

Why are they excluding women

It’s a strange thing to do

thereplycamefromanchorage · 17/11/2020 18:31

Thanks for flagging this op, I am going to write to the Eve Appeal about this.So infuriated and fucked off by the erasure of the word Woman.

Off now to start donating to Wellbeing of Women.

persistentwoman · 17/11/2020 18:33

I'd go further littlbrowndog It's displaying contempt for women. It actively excludes women, alienates women, fails to engage women in our own cancers.
It's a deeply misogynistic and cruel attitude to take - to remove the word women because groups like Stonewall lobby against women. I so regret ever funding them.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 17/11/2020 18:33

I don’t understand why people go into the business of charities, societies, etc that work precisely with women’s ‘things’- and then delete what word woman. Why but just work for a charity that doesn’t centre women?

BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero · 17/11/2020 19:00

The ‘Evan Appeal’.

PurpleHoodie · 17/11/2020 20:18

That would work Betty.

How many women will die due to The Eve Appeal using inappropriate language??

PurpleHoodie · 17/11/2020 20:31

I've had another look over at the Eve page.

It seems they may have been listening.

From what I have read so far, the information on the major gynae conditions has been separated into sections with correct language, and also a separate section with 'couched' language for those women who call themselves transmen/non-binary etc

Will have another in-depth look later.
