Social Care Wales rewriting Equality Act 2020

I know we see this everywhere, but if people in Wales would like to contact Social Care Wales...

They're looking for feedback on their Draft Priorities for 2021-26 and they've created an online survey. Question three lists the characteristics listed under the Equality Act as:

age, disability, gender identity / confirmation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

As we all know, it's gender reassignment that is the protected characteristic, not 'gender identity/ confirmation' — whatever that means. Why do they think it's okay to rewrite the law?

Sorry, that should be the Equality Act 2010, obviously.

Well spotted, Shedbuilder. This falsehood has been slipped quietly into all kinds of documents and policies. And it needs to be challenged every time.

Kit19 · 09/11/2020 17:53

Ahh they make it easy for you to point out that the protected characteristic listed are wrong

gardenbird48 · 09/11/2020 22:35

This is absolutely shocking behaviour from the Welsh government- if I was being generous I could assume gross incompetence but I’m not feeling generous tonight Angry so I think just plain old dirty tricks.

WattleOn · 10/11/2020 05:13

I have responded to the survey and pointed out that they are either incompetent or negligent.

Muppets.

Shedbuilder · 10/11/2020 11:21

They've now corrected it. I'm wondering about doing an FOI to find out how that 'mistake' occurred. I'm also writing to my AM/MS about it.

Please do. The alternative is that it will be swept under the carpet. Things will not change if we do not acknowledge mistakes and take active steps to avoid them in the future.

Agree it's really important to write to them even though they have corrected it. It might just possibly be a one-off error but it's more likely that it's another example of organisational capture.

Sex not Gender wrote an exemplar response on twitter - twitter.com/Sexnotgender_/status/1325911460099317760

and they have a really useful interactive list of culprits. www.sexnotgender.info/equality-monitoring/the-list/

If you are on here SnG, you are awesome! Thank you!

My guess?

They cut and pasted some shite off stonewalls.

MerchedCymru · 11/11/2020 23:26

Seems their social worker registration form is also problematic Shed - so maybe not just a one-off accident. Hope the FoI request clarifies what's going on.
