Well, @WestYorksPolice have decided that the arrests and fixed penalty notices were issued in error. It was just a ruse to shut down the Speakers Corner event in Leeds.

Letters sent to one of the women given a FPN!! t.co/nHe2BDlh3R

What a complete disgrace West York's police are. They've gone rogue and are pursuing a personal vendetta in my view.

Some information here:

www.donoghue-solicitors.co.uk/actions-against-the-police/police-warrant-claims/police-warrants-compensation/arrest-warrant-claims/

”Compensation claims may be made where the police:

provide incorrect information to obtain the arrest warrant,”

Interesting to see what information was on their warrant. There was a lot of discussion occurring among the officers arresting Posie about what charge they were holding her on.

The good thing is that Posie will follow this up. It’s a certainty.

Possibly not, Butterer. I realised that after I’d posted. Sorry.

Where does it say it was issued in error?
Just a ruse to shut down Speakers Corner event isn't what they said either, that's just your opinion stated as fact?

Angryresister · 03/11/2020 20:29

SoQuaagars why do you think this was done? And what about the “organisers” “offense” ?

JacobReesMogadishu · 03/11/2020 20:38

So one person has had it dropped and one they’re considering whether to go to court? There’s two different letters?

From the twitter thread I get the impression both letters were sent to the same person.

The second one sent first letting the woman know her letter saying she refused the FPN and wanted the matter to go to court had been received and it was now up to WYP to prosecute. Then the follow up letter (appearing first in the image) telling her that, having looked at the matter, WYP had decided the FPN was issued in error and they would not be prosecuting.

No, the police printed posters stating "We arrested women as a cunning ruse to shut down their protest" and stuck them up all round Leeds. FFS. The OP was obviously stating her opinion. And one that's backed by the evidence.

Police issued fixed penalty notice for gathering in a group of more than 6 people even though political gatherings are exempt from the Covid restrictions. Police officer said that gathering to talk about women's rights isn't political.

The women refused to pay and were willing to go to court. WY police review the evidence and decided not to prosecute.

They obviously recognise that they'll have egg on their faces, I'm not sure why you think apologies are something anyone can expect from them, their arrogance has been on show on many occasions.

This has legs - of interest to people with civil liberties concerns about misuse of Covid restrictions for political ends, as well as mouthy feminists ;)

Good that this is the outcome; must be a weight off minds that no fines are payable. if the women are up for taking it further, might get some sunlight on the decision making process to shut down the event in the first place.
