Sonia Sodha rips the BBC a new one.

RIP lovely Reeva.

Brilliant article. It reminded me of the good old days when the Guardian often had decent journalism.

chilling19 · 01/11/2020 13:21

Yes indeed.

I hate Oscar Pistorious. Shame on the BBC for casting doubt on his guilty verdict.

chilling19 · 01/11/2020 13:41

Yes he seems particularly entitled.

Sonia Sodha is one of the few good writers left at The Guardian. I'm surprised they haven't moved her on.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 01/11/2020 14:35

I hate him too and all those fawn over him. Vile man. Monster.

NewlyGranny · 01/11/2020 14:53

So easy to ignore the story of those silenced by violent death. Anything can be said about them and nothing can be contradicted.

Reeva is not forgotten.

RedDogsBeg · 01/11/2020 15:16

Wow, that is a powerful article and very well said Sonia Sodha.

PhilSwagielka · 01/11/2020 15:24

Me too. I hate it when he gets touted as an inspiration for disabled people. I can't run a marathon but at least I'm not a murderer.
RoyalCorgi · 01/11/2020 16:09

This is the Observer, so different editorial team, different choices etc. I agree, a very good piece.

AdaColeman · 01/11/2020 16:15

RIP beautiful Reeva.

Maduixa · 01/11/2020 16:31

I was living in South Africa when this case went to trial. One of the hardest things was watching Oscar’s ex-girlfriend Samantha talk about her experiences with him. This dude was a predator, everyone knows it. What on earth is the BBC’s agenda rehabililtating someone his own country agrees is guilty and culpable?

AmandaHoldensLips · 01/11/2020 16:35

I watched every moment of the trial. It was live-streamed. What a snivelling, lying, cowardly shit of a man. He murdered her, plain and simple. The lenience of his sentence was just another demonstration of how men get away with murdering women every single fucking day.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 01/11/2020 16:54

Did anyone see the episode of the Last Leg right after Pistorius murdered Reeva Steenkamp? Adam Hills talked about what a tragedy it was for sports and sportspeople with disabilities. Not once did he or anyone else mention what a tragedy it was that a woman lost her life. I've never really stopped feeling angry at the Last Leg presenters for that.

It seems the media has always written Reeva out of her own story. But then that's typical of women murdered by their partners. They all deserve better.

AnyFucker · 01/11/2020 16:57

Her name was Reeva Steenkamp and she was murdered.

Thank you, Sonia.

persistentwoman · 01/11/2020 17:29

Excellent article - incredible that the BBC are yet again going down this road.

Her name was Reeva Steenkamp and she was murdered

I watched it too, the feeling of utter revulsion for him and what he did to Reeva never goes away.

He knew exactly what he was doing, his tears were all for himself.

Last Leg - how disgusting.

We women just don't count or matter.

chilling19 · 01/11/2020 17:59

It is that old trope - the bloke who made a mistake. The number of women who are murdered behind that mistake are collateral damage. But, even in this scenario where women are not listened to, we still persist.

PhilSwagielka · 02/11/2020 00:18

We must keep saying Reeva Steenkamp’s name and not let her become another nameless dead victim.

tobee · 02/11/2020 02:51

A beautiful woman who had applied to the bar. Google search brings up "Reeva Steenkamp, South African model". She was so much more than that.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/11/2020 02:59

Pistorious is reprehensible. The only tears he shed were for himself. Reeva was executed.

RonaldMcDonald · 02/11/2020 03:01

I am appalled by the BbC

FannyCann · 02/11/2020 08:06

Excellent article.

And don't let's forget that in Victoria, Australia moves are being made to criminalise the naming of murdered women!

thecognoscenti · 02/11/2020 08:21

On a similar note I recommend anyone who is interested reads The Five by Hallie Rubenhold, about the lives of the women who were murdered by Jack the Ripper. I am interested in social history anyway but she does an excellent job of recounting these women's experiences and shows that they were so much more than just victims. The most interesting and valuable thing about a person's life is never the fact that someone else chose to take it from them.

thecognoscenti · 02/11/2020 08:22

And yes, Pistorius is a snivelling monstrous coward and Reeva deserved so much better than him.
