This is a really good series of tweets and article about endo, well done the Telegraph! Why, though, did they put one word in the headline in quotations?

How did I know which word it would be in quotations before clicking the link, eh?

Bloody hell though. That is a great job they’ve done there, such a shame it’s undermined by the scare quotes.

Maybe it’s the DT influence at the Telegraph?

It is good they are highlighting the issue.

If they are going to to punctuate at all surely it should be "....female (!)...."

highame · 25/10/2020 08:13

Really good tweets. I think the 'female' is a nice bit of YES IT ONLY HAPPENS TO FEMALES

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/10/2020 08:22

Except then you have true ir false- 20 percent of people visited their dr....

Clymene · 25/10/2020 08:26

It would be nice if they had replaced the word people with women, given endo is a issue which affects women and the reason sufferers are fobbed off is because they are women.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 25/10/2020 09:00

Meh, they use women everywhere else.

Before the nutters started trying to edit out the word women we'd never have noticed stuff like that, I don't think it's important when the whole thread is emphasising how women's health issues can be ignored.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/10/2020 09:05

Except its changes the whole meaning of the statistic. Is it one in 5 women or one in five people ? Could it actually be 2 or 3 in 5 if there were men in the group they asked?

It changes the whole thing

Exactly.

I just dislike it when things are presented as votes when they are true/false questions about an article or topic. I know the %s are meant to show how many people thought one or the other of the options was true, but presenting it in that format always seems to me to be making it look like facts are something that can be voted on (and we all know how that turns out!).

Actually I hate polls on news sites generally, because they are too often asking about things where the only opinions I really need are those of experts, not of the general public. The views of the general public are then totally misrepresented in further headlines and articles, and everyone ends up confused.

The 'female' in quotes is a bit odd, given that they use 'woman' correctly throughout. Maybe whoever wrote it was actually trying to give a subtle hint as to the idiocy of others who use incorrect language and mangle statistics?Confused

Or maybe they were trying to convey something about the substance of their tweets - that because this is a purely female condition, it's been particularly affected by the dismissal, appalling record on diagnosis and treatment etc as the following tweets show?

“It goes back hundreds of years to women being treated as inferior humans. The majority of medical testing is done on white males. It’s ingrained in our society & the medical system that women have periods & they hurt & that’s just what it is,”

I was actually pretty amazed to see this in a tweet from the Telegraph, Errol!
