Parents in Scotland - Email John Swinney about content of RSHP material

I don't know if this has been mentioned on the board before, but there is a template available at the For Women Scotland website to help parents write their own emails to John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Education, about several concerning aspects of the Relationship, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) material.

RSHP Education

It would be great if as many parents as possible were to do this. The example letter does a great job of outlining the main issues - and they are pretty worrying.

Have you asked Baroness Nicholson for some help?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 09/10/2020 22:06

Thanks Nonny

I don't know if For Women Scotland have gotten in touch with Baroness Nicholson or what she might be able to do. The sample letter looks pretty well written and raises a number of issues. I guess if a substantial number of parents were to email Swinney, there might be a better chance of him responding to the concerns. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking!

With all due respect to the Baroness, I'm not sure what effect a member of the House of Lords can have on the Scottish Government regarding a matter of devolved law.

Cabinfever10 · 10/10/2020 02:11

Thanks for that will email him in the morning and pass the link on

Betsy that was me being a bit dim re devolved law but she might have some allies that could write the kind of letter that she does.

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2020 08:57

That's a very good letter, thank you. I've had quick scans through the RSHP materials but only for stages relevant to my kids, there is a LOT to get through, so this is immensely helpful. Clear, logical, and backed up with good references.

Bumping up for the weekend. Smile

If you find similar issues when examining the RSHP materials for your children, or different ones, post them here so others can reference it when writing up their emails. Smile

At my dc’s school the parents were shown the new video for S5-S7s for ‘Living and Growing, but it was so graphic that the teachers agreed with the parents to stick to the older cartoon one.

NonnyMouse1337 · 13/10/2020 09:25

Yikes... Who is coming up with such material and deciding it should be part of the curriculum?!

Thanks for highlighting this, I had no idea this is what is being taught! I will go and investigate further and email John Swinney.

That is a great letter.

FWS have updated their page with a response a parent received. It's at the bottom of the page.
