Parliament have agreed that GRA reform will be scheduled for debate. A GRA petition (launched after the GRA consultation did not back self ID) reached 100,000 signatures. it is not yet possible to confirm a date for this debate. As soon as a date for this debate has been confirmed, you’ll get another update.

This is the Petition
Reform the Gender Recognition Act

Reform the GRA to allow transgender people to self-identify without the need for a medical diagnosis, to streamline the administrative process, and to allow non-binary identities to be legally recognised.

You can follow the House of Commons Committee on Twitter for updates: twitter.com/hocpetitions

It's good to see. What I'm worried about is that the Commons is full of MPs keen to push the gender identity ideology with invocations of "be kind" and "most oppressed ever" on the basis of bogus facts and statistics, while MPs who don't agree often haven't been motivated to learn what's going on or want to keep their heads below the parapet.

NecessaryScene1 · 02/10/2020 18:32

Oh no, not a debate! Whatever you do, please don't drag us into a debate...

FindTheTruth · 02/10/2020 18:32

Agree @nauticant which is why MPs need to hear from constituents on this... if enough contact them perhaps they'll be motivated to learn?

That would be dreadful

TRA claims:

  1. GRA reform is supported by both the BMA and the TUC.
  2. every major women's organisation in Scotland supports reform (Close the Gap, Engender, Equate Scotland, Rape Crisis Scotland, Scottish Women’s Aid, Women 50:50 and Zero Tolerance)
  3. Scotland already uses self ID
  4. The only thing the GRA affects is getting a GRC and changing your birth certificate.
  5. do not regard trans equality and women’s equality to be in competition
  6. Rape Crisis and Women’s Aid in Scotland provide trans inclusive services based on self ID
  7. Enable trans people to smoothly change their birth certificate at the same time they change their other ID documents

I'm stunned at how childish they are-anyone who dares mention that dirty word 'women' is obviously, literally a raging transphobe. What a spectacularly ridiculous way to think.

The social media gobshites should consider themselves lucky they don't have to go in there and debate for themselves. They'd be laughed out of the fucking building in minutes.

If it’s anything like the state of the ‘
Questions to Liz truss it’ll be full of wound up woke & poorly informed MPs. It’ll be a shit show

Also many petitions get over 100,000 & get rejected for debate. Amazing how the most oppressed group ever get one

nauticant · 02/10/2020 19:34

Yes, having the debate with the government having just kicked off the Cass review and no one being able to agree on what "trans" means with everything swimming in a sea of mis/disinformation is not going to benefit anyone except those in favour of more confusion.

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 02/10/2020 19:49

Seems a bit of a pointless petition - surely the government will decline to waste time discussing the issue given that they just, y'know, had a whole consultation on potential GRA reform and decided against it as a result of that?

Kit19 · 02/10/2020 20:06

I agree but they’ve agreed to schedule it for debate for some reason

BalhamWoman · 02/10/2020 20:31

The transcript of this debate will provide fabulous material for election campaigning. All those who speak against women's legal civil rights can have their exact words printed on leaflets and handed to every women in every constituency to encourage voting them out for failing to represent and uphold laws for women in those constituencies.

highame · 02/10/2020 22:04

I hope Keir Starmer will be forced to tell us what a woman is.

I think the aim is to cause as much confusion as possible. We are going to be in for a rough ride.

Should be scheduled after Ann Sinnotts Judicial Review, given that the Law Society think laws regarding single sex spaces should be ignored I'm wondering if democracy can survive

Gncq · 02/10/2020 22:10

It should be reformed. It should be completely scrapped.

They dont always have these debates in the House of Commons.

Sometimes it is just a sort of open meeting in Westminster Hall (I cant remember which women's issue it was but a lot of us got excited about a HoC debate - but it got shunted).

So it will be significant which venue is chosen, and whether any senior MPs take place.

I can see it now. Westminster Hall full of rainbows and glitter, and dramatic speeches of undying support for TRAs/ MRAs.
