Oh this makes me SO angry!

Datun · 19/09/2020 09:12

I read this yesterday. Utterly rage inducing.

When women objected to the man masturbating in a nearby bed at night, a coworker mocked the women’s prudery to me, expecting I would find it equally absurd. How puritanical and square to be upset by some guy jerking off to pornography three feet away! My coworker did not write a report about the complaint. I did, but nothing came of it. Several weeks later, the man was restricted from the shelter, after threatening to shoot everyone, but his public masturbation and the distress it caused women trying to sleep in neighbouring beds was never addressed.

A man is getting off on boundary breaking and female intimidation in a women's shelter and it's the objecting women who are criticised.

A depressing read.

FannyCann · 19/09/2020 19:38

This is so depressing. I have such contempt for the women who facilitate this, falling over themselves to be the wokest, failing to do their job, protecting women at the women's shelter.

DrDavidBanner · 19/09/2020 19:54

My coworker did not write a report about the complaint. I did, but nothing came of it....but his public masturbation and the distress it caused women trying to sleep in neighbouring beds was never addressed.

I watched Athlete A today, all those poor girls who were brave enough to speak out about Larry Nassar's abuse were completely ignored because it made things difficult. What's the difference here? Countless men get away with the most disturbing abuse of vulnerable women and girls because people just don't care.

MichelleofzeResistance · 19/09/2020 20:04

Again, where women try to seek help and report inappropriate behaviour, staff don't record it according to their usual systems. They maintain the lie "there are no issues", and by doing so they actively collude with the male service user against the female one.

Exactly the same as a MNetter reported here having joined a meeting of women talking to refuge staff about their need for single sex space and how distressing they were finding it. The MNetter said by the end of the meeting many of the women were in tears at how obviously the staff did not care, and after the meeting one of the staff made a public statement, brazenly lying that no women had ever raised issues.

What do you do with people in positions of responsibility who apparently have no integrity or professionality and just edit reality without conscience to serve their personal biases?

Aesopfable · 19/09/2020 20:08

it is now shelter policy that we prioritize protecting men’s delusions, even if that means we can no longer protect women

From what she writes it seems it is not simply the shelter’s policy to prioritise men; it now exists to validate men’s wants and the women are just props to enable them to do this.

NecessaryScene1 · 19/09/2020 20:22

The article explains exactly why we're against this. It's corruption, of the soul. Once you start accepting one lie, you have to start needing to accept bigger and bigger lies. The whole system becomes devoted to upholding the lie, and covering up the consequences of the lie. Everything else becomes secondary.

In an interview Helen Joyce said something about this:

It's like in maths, if you make one mistake, if you make one untrue statement the whole proof ... doesn't stand and if you allow one falsehood, it doesn't matter what it is, like zero equals one, you can prove anything... Not really prove, but argue to the point of anything you like. So once you've introduced one piece of nonsense into legislation it all falls apart. It's the universal acid.

And trans people wonder why we are so strongly against self identification and the whole “trans women are women” trope. An absolute no from me.

OhHolyJesus · 19/09/2020 21:09

Bloody hell.

Important to read. Have shared.

Bourbonbiscuits20 · 19/09/2020 21:39

Thanks for sharing. Madness

Roystonv · 19/09/2020 22:12

I just do not understand how barmy this all is, how so many are being bullied, blindsided and buying into this for the sake of a tiny %. Every time I read something here I feel so sick and sad and angry and yet so many still don't know it is happening to their wives, mother's, sisters. Those that do raise their heads above the parapet get shot down with such cruelty, such lies.

Datun · 19/09/2020 22:16

I don't think they wonder why.

It's patently, blatantly, earth shatteringly mindbogglingly, blindly, spectacularly obvious.

They know why. It doesn't matter. And of course, for some, it's the entire point. Those who threaten women like JK Rowling with the most creative torture they can come up with?

Knowing we're against it, is the entire reason why they're for it.

Datun · 19/09/2020 22:19

In the time that I have worked at the shelter, men have always been welcome to stay alongside the women, on one condition: the men must tell us they are women.

This is the madness.

Aesopfable · 19/09/2020 22:36

It is so refreshing reading an article which speaks clearly and doesn’t need to find convoluted ways to try and avoided saying the obvious truth . A truth I am no longer certain I am allowed to say on MN, particularly at weekends.

Jumbogirl · 19/09/2020 22:41

FFS that has made me so angry

HumphreyCobblers · 19/09/2020 22:45

I felt sick reading that. With fear and rage.

RuffleCrow · 19/09/2020 22:54

Brilliant article! I'm so angry at these thìnly veiled misogynists of both sexes. How eagerly they must have waited out the past few decades just waiting for the moment when it would be socially acceptable to hate "bad" women again. Fuckers.

ArranBound · 20/09/2020 00:11

I could cry reading that article. I don't know what to say.
