Hadley Freeman in the Spectator on gender

Apologies if this has been posted already. Hadley Freeman writing in the Spectator - “Like a lot of tragically heteronormative women, I am an innate people-pleaser, and for a long time my greatest fear, aside from being forced to go camping, was angering people. But then the latest version of gender theory took off and it turned out that I had a greater fear: denying the bleeding obvious...So now I’m a woman who displeases people, which gender theorists should celebrate as overturning gender norms. And yet, strangely, they do not. Turns out I don’t understand what being a woman means after all.”

It's not shocking enough, either. The only person in the land who could have thought Symonds was going to be Johnson's final relationship was Symonds, and possibly not even she did.

Hadley probably just rolled her eyes when she heard about that.

Frankly Hadley is one of the very few reasons I read (online) the Guardian.

I don't subscribe anymore.

Imho she's witty and spot in with a lot of her articles.

SapphosRock · 18/09/2020 20:12

Hadley Freeman is great, she's been quietly chipping away at the issue for a while. Thanks for sharing OP, good to see she is getting more forthright.

Here's another good one she wrote a while ago.

Fucking A, I love HF!

I’ve been reading the Speccie since my mum first taught me how to make G&T at the age of 7, and asked me to bring her copy over with her drink.

CountFosco · 18/09/2020 20:36

I'm now driving DH mad giggling at HF's columns.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 18/09/2020 21:08

Didn’t she wrote something in the defence of Karen’s?

Agreed - HF is great.

BlackWaveComing · 18/09/2020 21:57

Helen Lewis wrote the Karen article, for The Atlantic, I think.

StandUpStraight · 18/09/2020 22:33

Thanks for sharing those HF Guardian articles. I was actually quite surprised that such forthright articles had been published by that newspaper, but then they were a few years ago now. I find it difficult to imagine the Guardian publishing them today. (I wonder if there are ever internal campaigns to have old, problematic articles disappeared from the Guardian website.)

Guardian’s been way more divided over this issue than you think. Suzanne has had her articles published despite the letter. They still have strong content on women’s issues and writers who clearly write about women. Great article on the impact of lockdown on women. It’s not that clear cut - sure there was a post somewhere about some rows in the office.

One of their pop writers, Ben Beaumont was ratioed on Twitter after he tried to mansplain the ‘issue’ with JK and mainly by left wing women who had stopped reading the guardian and had previously bought the print addition for years. It was 100s of people. Hard to ignore. Even Alison Flood today couldn’t say the new JK novel was transphobic.

I’m sure Hadley posted she wouldn’t be a regular contributor for the Guardian now. So possibly moving on.

Love Hadley 💞 she. Just. Gets it.

Thank god Hadley! I've loved her writing for years but as she was at the Guardian I was worried about what she had to say about this, so much so I'd been avoiding her writing in case I was disappointed!

PotholeParadise · 19/09/2020 02:10

You should follow Hadley on twitter. She's acerbic about GC matters on there, too.

Annasgirl · 19/09/2020 15:21

I joined to pay a subscription - imagine, I have moved from the Guardian to the Spectator with the trans issue!!

sonicbook · 19/09/2020 17:05

My guess is that he's quitting. Health reasons.
