Just raised point on sex not gender with hr

New online training listing equality act protected characteristics as gender. Good training apart from that. Have just emailed hr to say that it is incorrect. Feel like taking a big risk in current climate and a bit lonely. But also that it was time to say something.

Good for you. There seem to be a lot of posts like this at the mo - small things but will add up to a big difference if lots of us are doing it. 🌟

Hooray I did the same a few weeks ago. It was via the training 'feedback' at the end of the (online) course. I've not heard anything back at all! They'd added a few randoms in and omitted 'sex'. So bizarre! How can an EDI team be so ignorant within their own specialist field?

I work for the largest bank in the UK and the global diversity policy now also says gender, along with some other random stuff the isn't in the act at all. I don't have the guts to point it out - maybe they have some other reason for the odd looking list.

I wrote our diversity material and refused to budge on the legal protected characteristics when challenged by the diversity 'experts'. I just kept quoting the law and asking if they wanted to consult the legal team on re-writing legislation to suit their perception of the law. That shut them up for now and my training proudly lists sex as a protection characteristic

Their internal policy can extend the protection but they can't remove existing legal protection. So they can add whatever random category they like but it should always include the full legal protections.

I can’t see what an employee who falls within a protected characteristic under the Equality Act could be regarded as doing wrong by merely politely asking the employer to include that characteristic in its equality policy in order to avoid any (inadvertent I’m sure ) implication that it does not regard sex discrimination as seriously as discrimination against other protected characteristics.

Got an email back already to say thanks for pointing it out and adding it to their list of things to change and will be updating it! Am amazed (and a bit relieved!). Just said thought the training was good but their list of protected characteristics was incorrect. Which it is.

I complain about this stuff under a pseudonym and would if it were my workplace. They need to take it as they would from any member of the public pointing out they are not accurately reflecting the law. So even if it's your workplace you can complain... I could never use my own name for fear of retribution...

I did exactly this in work and had it changed. I think it is little things like this where we can and should use our own personal influence. It is a factual correction that ought to be pointed out and rectified. Well done, OP. It is also a point where we should all feel on safe ground.
