Open and honest chat. Refreshing.

Just tuned in. Do you know who the other two are? Joanna someone and Helen someone.

thecompletenonsequitur · 10/09/2020 13:29

Oh, and Ash Sarkar...

Siablue · 10/09/2020 13:31

Not listening but the Helen is Helen Pluckrose. She has written a book called cynical theories which is a critique of all the social justice stuff. I saw this on her Twitter.

How do you listen to Times Radio?

thecompletenonsequitur · 10/09/2020 13:35

I'll have to listen again on catch up later.

And it looks like I missed Dr Jane Clare Jones.

thecompletenonsequitur · 10/09/2020 13:37

Siablue it´s on DAB and I think on ap.

AbsintheFriends · 10/09/2020 14:01

Wow, is Mariella GC? That is a very welcome surprise if so.

Pleased to hear that she's GC. I read on here that she was completely woke, so stopped listening.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 10/09/2020 17:04

Goodness, I didn't know about this channel.

It looks like R4, but, where people are allowed to say that women are people too?

Here's the catchup link:

MorrisZapp · 10/09/2020 20:08

Mariella didn't say anything GC herself, but she was polite and friendly and unchallenging when the guest said that women were adult human females etc and seemed to agree that the average person in the street wouldn't have any idea this was even controversial.

The best bit of Times Radio is Matt Chorley every day from 10 til 1, he's hilarious and absolutely bullshit free.

I like MC but, when he had Janice Turner on with Matthew Parris a few months ago, and they discussed TRAs, Matt just laughed when Janice was describing some of the madness. He didn't take the threat to women's rights seriously at all, and MP was (predictably) all "But why can't women just be kind"?

lojoko · 10/09/2020 21:33

It's good isn't it? I started listening last week and I've retuned my radio now ( set to radio 4 these last 15 years).

It's just a bit less tense.

Completely agree. And Janice Turner was really on form in that interview. I too like MC but it made you realise men just don’t care.

👆🏻This. It's really not worth their while. I suspect many view it as a handbags at dawn situation. Amusing, bemusing, frivolous, insignificant.

MaMaLa321 · 10/09/2020 23:03

what did Ash Sarker say?
I despise her so utterly, I couldn't bear it if she was GC.

"some of the stuff coming out is not only self indulgent uselessness, a lot of it is blatantly unethical and counter productive to the purpose of social justice. I describe it as though we are describing bad medical papers. We need people to be criticising bad pseudo science and bad approaches to things in order to support the good approaches to things. The liberal feminists, the material feminists and the medical feminists, particularly gender critical ones are the ones most under fire by the new queer theory activism."

She's one of those people that, if I ever found myself agreeing with her opinion about any issue, I'd have to seriously check my thinking.

She's not GC, BTW.

Something has happened since 2010 which created call out culture and has now turned into cancel culture, which is very authoritarian and seeks to discipline what people are saying and threatens their livelihoods if they deviate from the doctrine

Dr. Jane Clare Jones

listening to this debate I can't help but feel that everyone can get a lot less stressed out and happier when you make your peace with the fact that 90% of most cultural output in academia is a load of tosh

Ash Sarkar

the problem with the framing of woke and some of the framing of social justice in this book is that is sqooshes together lots of inter-elated but also different phenomena. and I think one of the reasons we've become so obsessed with identity as the main way in which we understand political conflict is because really over the last 40 years, particularly in Britain and America, is the institutions which produced class consciousness; trade unions, council housing, heavy industry - they've all really disintegrated and what we've been left with to understand the world around us and power dynamics, which do exist, are these sort of floating cultural signifiers that we've got to latch onto and create a narrative out of

Ash Sarkar

Mollscroll · 11/09/2020 07:38

Ash Sarker sounds quite coherent in those quotes Confused

FindTheTruth · 11/09/2020 07:38

The book: Cynical Theories: How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity--And Why This Harms Everybody

by: Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 11/09/2020 07:45

I agree with that latter quote from Ash.

ArabellaScott · 11/09/2020 07:53

I think Ash Darker might have a point, just not very clearly expressed.

ArabellaScott · 11/09/2020 07:54

*Sarker ffs autocorrect
