Jane Garvey quits Woman's Hour

Can't say I'm hugely surprised: it's pretty clear that she and Jenni Murray have been gagged over then trans issue — and if over that, what else? Garvey's love of and cynicism about WH has been obvious for some time.

Is this the end of WH? While I have to say that in recent years my listening has dwindled, I'd hate the TRAs to see its disappearance as a victory.

I love Jenni and Jane and am really sorry to see both of them go. Fingers crossed for their replacements.

Please not the dreadful Fi Glover.

What’s wrong with Fi???

SpringFan · 04/09/2020 22:31

Whats wrong with Fi
She's seriously patronising, and full of herself. Way over promoted in my opinion.

Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if the next presenter was a trans woman.

I'd quite like it if it was. I think listening numbers would soon give a telling message.

@Rubidium

I am a bit worried they will go young and (even more) woke though.

The BBC's new Director General seems to want to move the Beeb away from wokeness, though. See the recent Last Night of the Proms business. Time will tell, I guess.

So the price of not having Eddie Izzard presenting Woman's Hour will be having to live in some post imperial Imperial Brexity sitcom. Like being trapped in a revolving Zimmer frame for eternity. But this is where we are.[confused

I wonder if having a TW presenter would be a short term pain for long term gain? Judging from my mum a lot of the listeners are still in be kind mode - the light shed by a firmly TWAW no debate presenter might open a lot of eyes to where we are heading.

picklemewalnuts · 05/09/2020 13:53

There can't be any doubt that the timing of JG leaving is linked to how things will be post Jenni Murray, surely? As in she hadn't intended to go but has seen the ghost of Christmas future and decided to move on.

MichelleofzeResistance · 05/09/2020 14:03

It's not like the world isn't knee deep in incredible, inspiring, exciting female people - we're half the bloody population ffs. And there are a ton of female focused issues that are forefront on the radar of female people that are urgently in need of talking about and action taken over and of high interest to female people. And the whole point of womans hour is one, one spot, on a week's worth of radio, that is for and about female people. Gardeners get more air time.

But even this has to be all about men and men's feelings of exclusion and men's issues, and as discussing here, it's quite possible that this will end up hosted by someone male who will wish to ensure discussion is 'inclusive', by which we mean certainly not about things of exclusive interest to female people. Because mean and nasty to male people for there to be anything at all ever that is not in some way about them.

It's misogyny on bloody crack.

MichelleofzeResistance · 05/09/2020 14:09

You would also think that male people identifying as women would have some interest in female things and female voices and female issues, wouldn't you?

Isn't it baffling that actually it's not like that at all? The inclusion of male people into the female only spaces definitely is, and the presence of female people who aren't allowed to have/do anything where male people can't be present absolutely is, but then there's the flat desire that female people stop talking about or doing anything not of interest or relevance to male people present because excluding and implying that women are female.

And certainly from the evidence I see, there's no celebrating female people or interest in their voices or stories, or wanting to support and be involved with female causes because sisterhood etc, as if there's no fellow feeling. Lots of expectations and demands, but no apparent want for community or even good will.

JaJaDingDong · 05/09/2020 15:47

Calm down Michelle! It hasn't happened yet. We're just pontificating.
:)

Sadly that was my first though too.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 05/09/2020 16:37

Perhaps they'll give the job to Jane Fae, so that transwomen no longer have to quake in terror at the thought of being on Woman's Hour? I'm sure the audience would love to hear all about the importance of being able to access the kind of currently banned extremely violent rape porn that causes permanent physical injuries to the performers, and how women are to blame for being murdered because of their silly fragile lady skulls.

KnowingYou · 05/09/2020 16:47

People are allowed to change jobs! Doesn’t mean it’s anything to do with TRAs or anything sinister. Perhaps she just wants to move on and is excited about her new programme.

With the odd guerrilla knitting session thrown in. Yes that could work.

shudder yes... and I hate hate The Listening Project with a passion esp when I hear her 'oh my god I've got to talk about working class people here' voice.
AgnesNaismith · 05/09/2020 21:18

Meh...I think calling a woman full of herself is some pretty strong internalised misogyny.

I think Fi is excellent but appreciate different opinions, if only they were rooted in intelligent criticism.

PearPickingPorky · 05/09/2020 21:31

@StandUpStraight

Actually, I think this would be excellent. And probably the best option.

Whoever they pick, its not going to be someone openly critical of transgenderism, so it will either be someone Woke or someone secretly GC who doesn't have the capital to be open about that and front it out. So they're going to have to toe the TWAW line.

We all knew JM & JG were both aware of how bullshit gender ideology was, but it didn't really help much in getting the issue talked about with anywhere near the clarity needed.

It's the hope which kills you... So it would be better for everyone if they just threw in the towel and handed it over to a transwoman and Jameela Jamil and got done with the whole thing, then we can all switch off.
