www.independent.co.uk/voices/feminism-gen-z-women-online-abuse-twitter-reddit-diane-abbott-jess-taylor-a9653381.html

I found this section interesting:
To understand why males feel entitled to act in this way, we need to look at the broader internet. The Detransitioners subreddit appeared to disappear for a time before reappearing, but Reddit says it is not banned. The message board had been formed for trans men to discuss their experiences of wishing to de-transition. A number of male users decided that the board was “anti-trans” and had it shut down. Likewise, a number of feminist boards have also been removed or hidden from the site. For example, Reddit has hidden the r/PCOS sub (women discussing polycystic ovary syndrome) and the r/pregnancy sub was made inaccessible following complaints from men who found the contents “triggering”.

This alone is concerning but, when you realise that Reddit still allows boards such as some of those named here, we have to ask what is really going on.

None of it is anything we don’t already know but it’s all good to have it out there.

An aside from the main point of the article, but Dr Jess Taylor is truly incredible. With her book Why women are blamed for everything she's well and truly broken the 10th rule of misogyny - 'speaking about male violence makes men look bad' - and has reaped the reward of this with the tsunami of abuse unleashed against her online.

And still she keeps going, and challenging that canker called misogyny that's always permeated our society but is becoming increasingly overt in the face of recent male rights activism.

Go Jess!

I agree, this is the first time I've actually seen what happened on Reddit reported on.

I like that she said it was men who demanded the closure of the subs. Not TRAs or MRAs, no ambiguity or dancing about. Just men.

Until the internet is run by women, nothing will change. In fact, it is going to get a lot worse. Online is a man's world, they own it

And it's surprising to see it in The Independent, of all places.

Very surprising.

Don't bother with the comments. Hmm

Never look at the bottom half of the internet. That’s where ‘they’ live.

By banning feminist voices whilst promoting anti-female hate, these sites are reinforcing the idea that it is acceptable to degrade and threaten women simply for voicing an opinion you do not agree with.

They are allowing a culture of punishment to form, where the rebuke is more important than the reason for it. Where the aim is not to suggest another way of thinking, but to leave women (emotionally) battered, afraid and unable to stand up to for themselves. In short, it is becoming a how-to guide for abusive males.

Yep. We've handed over unfathomable power, all without reflection or hesitation, and the results are looking increasingly frightening. What started as anarchy has become a wholly unaccountable oligarchy. We're living in the age of the online robber barons, but this time, their customer's minds are both product and harvest.

I think it was a good article. I think I have seen that journalists name on some other good feminist articles. I know it is stuff we know but it is good to see it in print.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 06/08/2020 19:12

the bottom half of the internet. - excellent descriptor!

The way it says men. “Men are triggered”. Makes them look so stupid!
