Barrister Barbara Hewson, states that the age of consent should be lowered in order to protect men. Absolutely disgusting.

While the comments are obviously vile, they’re not surprising from her.

Shedbuilder · 03/08/2020 16:56

She's a controversialist who's in trouble for using obscene language on social media and bringing hr profession into disrepute.

Jesus. Scary isnt - it that educated women are paving the way for our children to be abused and exploited. Hopefully no one will touch her with a barge pole now

timetest · 03/08/2020 16:58

At least her chambers have disassociated themselves from her abhorrent remarks.

PotholePalace · 03/08/2020 16:59

No, what she said makes no sense to me.

AuntyPasta · 03/08/2020 16:59

The comments are from 2013. She was suspended for 2 years more recently.

When someone tells you who they are, believe them...

I hope she is removed from her position. Vile.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 03/08/2020 17:02

There’s a name for people like that...

AuntyPasta · 03/08/2020 17:02

She was suspended last year (I think) for two years for, among other things, an insulting tweet about the Bar Standards Board after they warned her about her use of social media. She’s not going to be a judge anytime ever.

CountFosco · 03/08/2020 17:06

I'm think we should actually raise the age of consent to 18 with a romeo and juliet clause for 16 and 17 yo.

Looking at my soon to be 13 yo who doesn't even have periods yet no way should 13yo be having sex.

isabellerossignol · 03/08/2020 17:09

The comments are really old but I don't think she has improved since then. It's pretty grim and all the more upsetting that it's coming from a woman. She must be the barrister equivalent of one of the lads. Hmm

Soubriquet · 03/08/2020 17:12

I know this is old but still

Lowering the age to protect men?!

Nothing to do with the girls?!

Sick

deepwatersolo · 03/08/2020 17:15

I just realized that in the region I live (and beyond), namely Germany, Austria and Italy the age of consent is 14. I always thought it was only legal from 14 up, if the partner was not older than... But no. A 85 year old guy shagging a 14 year old is totally ok if she doesn't take money, 'consents' and can grasp the implications of what they do or if there older partner is in a position of authority over the younger person.
Oh and there actually is a regulation pertaining to age difference.
If there was severe sexual abuse and the abuser is no more than 3 years older, the abuser won't be prosecuted (unless it was very humiliating and torturous or the victim was younger than 14).
I want to puke.

DaisiesandButtercups · 03/08/2020 17:31

@CountFosco

Yes I agree, we should raise the age of consent to 18 with allowances for 16/17 year olds in the case of a consenting same age relationship, I am guessing that is what a Romeo and Juliet clause is...

This article is truly disturbing. Why on Earth protect elderly paedophiles instead of children?

SirVixofVixHall · 03/08/2020 18:05

I agree CountFosco

Forgivenandsetfree · 03/08/2020 18:29

@isabellerossignol I was going to say a similar thing re. Trying to appear like 'one of the lads'.
It's almost like she craves acceptance from these men, to show she's sympathetic towards them and she's not 'that type of woman'.

Men must have written that law.

So, the age of consent should be lowered to 13 to protect adult men?

Let’s make it easier for adult men to have sex with children shall we? Great!

Fucking disgusting, and coming from a woman too. There are names for people like her.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/08/2020 20:01

DidoLamenting · 03/08/2020 20:18

However, she did securelibel damagesfrom theMail Onlineafter the website accepted that it had incorrectly reported the allegations about her

No. 16 is ok . If you were going to make any change I would prefer an upper limit age gap- anyone over 26 commits an offence if the other person is 16.
