It’s the whole BBC charities debacle with Mermaids. They mention bitterly that this happened on her birthday too.

This from one of the comments:

That's super disappointing - especially if it was down to 'complaints'.

Oh the irony.

Kantastic · 31/07/2020 18:40

The BBC’s Pride network said on 15 July that it had spent a week trying to discover the “rationale” for removing the trans charities but admitted it still did not know.

oooh that's interesting isn't it? Is the reason secret, I wonder?

OneWomanOneDog · 31/07/2020 18:44

This move... has already seen the public-service broadcaster condemned for “bowing down to deliberate and orchestrated hate campaigns” against trans people.

Oh. The. Fucking. Irony.

highame · 31/07/2020 20:33

I love the comment if I paid the licence fee I'd stop

I don't think even the Beeb is going to worry about that one

ThinEndoftheWedge · 31/07/2020 20:34

Shouldn’t we rename 31st July as international JK Women’s Day.

highame · 31/07/2020 20:58

Rowl over for Women Day😁

OneEpisode · 31/07/2020 21:04

One of the reasons it was updated was because it just needed an update. The old version seemed to refer to an organisation, the Gender Trust, which doesn’t exist any more?

So this is just normal updating?
And they are calling people “cunt” etc as a result?

NearlyGranny · 31/07/2020 21:48

Very little (no) rational debate, lots of heat (and hate) but little light being generated. Lots of misogynistic expletives, though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

DoctorTwo · 31/07/2020 21:55

They see her Rowling, they hating

Melroses · 31/07/2020 22:21

You can never concede enough to them Hmm

At least 2 will not be paying the licence fee that they are not paying Confused

It's interesting the the BBC are saying that they link the NHS which provides the relevant links. They are letting the NHS take the lead/flack in a controversial area which maybe they should have done in the first place. However the NHS site used to have, not only links to Mermaids, but, the whole anon biography that founded it - that disappeared quite a while ago.

They appear to be doing what they can to prepare their plausible deniability.
Smurftastic · 31/07/2020 22:47

This is hilarious, they're calling BBC 'far right' and conservative. Isn't there a show about a trans child on CBBC? Also there's a thread about some BBC employees questioning the TRA narrative. Good to know they've not all gone insane. www.buzzfeed.com/markdistefano/leaked-messages-reveal-how-female-bbc-staff-have-clashed

highame · 31/07/2020 22:53

The thread is 2018 - 2 years old. I wonder what is going on now?

From the comments and pics, I guess the average age of those complaining about this is 15, probably girls, or middle aged men.
Manderleyagain · 01/08/2020 00:03

Thanks for the buzz feed article - hadn't seen it. Its from 2018 - about the time I was just realising something was up. It is really interesting that women were raising these issues within the BBC then, because it felt like there was media silence then. This place was the main source of news.

DodoPatrol · 01/08/2020 16:05

I don't get it. J K Rowling's Galbraith books have multiple, sympathetically treated, trans characters. Why don't they all go and target someone writing actual anti-trans screeds instead?

Smurftastic · 01/08/2020 17:39

@Dodo it's because J.K. Rowling is famous and she dared to stand for women. She's the highest profile celebrity to go against the trans agenda. She's herself left-wing and a lot of her fans are young, woke and extreme in their views. They see it as betrayal of one of their own kind- even though nothing she said is transphobic. I fell out with one of my best friends over it, they tried to 'educate me' when I said I don't think she's transphobic!! So many ridiculous youtube videos from wokesters claiming she's the devil Angry!

DodoPatrol · 01/08/2020 17:56

Mmm, I guess I agree that it's a feeling of betrayal. No one expects Piers Morgan or your average bloke to be 'nice'.

Kennebec · 01/08/2020 19:24

ResetERA has an extremely narrow range of "acceptable" views, and it's notorious for its ban-happy mods. You can't actually debate on the board, and if you don't adhere to far-left viewpoints, you will get banned. It's perhaps the biggest video gaming forum out there; it was formed after an exodus from its predecessor, NeoGAF, after NeoGAF's owner was accused of sexual misconduct. NeoGAF became a traditionally laddish cesspool after that, so while discussing gaming, you have a choice between "shut up and show me your tits" sexism and "shut up, Karen" sexism. Real fun time to be a female gamer.

Other sample OTs on Rowling from ResetERA:
TERF JK Rowling continues to be a hateful bigot. (26 pages of frustrated witch hunters!)
Vile TERF Rowling can't stop spreading hate.
JK Rowling proves she is nothing but a hateful TERF in essay ‘TERF wars’

So they're very frustrated that she's thriving.

Kennebec · 01/08/2020 19:35

Oh, and there was a notorious thread about a U.S. weightlifting competition's decision to prohibit trans women from competing in the female division where it was stated that "anyone concern posting about genetic advantages by transgender women in competitive sports or claiming transgender women have genetic advantages will be treated as transphobia and/or spreading misinformation on a sensitive issue and moderated appropriately." The thread is amazing. There is so much laughable pseudoscience cited for the decisions.

christinarossetti19 · 01/08/2020 19:43

It's so interesting that the responses tend to fall into a few categories

  • JKR is a bitch/cunt/transphobe/full boomer
  • STFU
  • JKR hates trans people

I can't see one post even attempting to justify why eg the BBC should include Mermaids on its site or actually engaging with her pov.

I suppose that part of trans activism is believing that your body is against you and that somehow gradually becomes the whole of reality is against you. Must be awful to be in such a persecuted state tbf, but one that they can identify out of in the way that biological women can't identify out of being women.

Royal Mail tweeded happy birthday J K Rowling.
30 minutes later deleted it.

DoctorTwo, I think I love you!

I think the most relevant lyric for Mumsnet is:

I think the Gin again is in again...
