As I understand the case, Maya is saying that her belief is that men aren't women and this is akin to holding a religious belief and shouldn't be discriminated against.

Is there any law that deals with not being required to follow someone else's religious beliefs? And if not, why not?

I think it would come under the protected characteristic of religion or belief in the Equality Act.

The Act says that ‘religion includes... a lack of religion’. This means that people without a religion, such as atheists, humanists and secularists, are protected under the Act.

Karon Monaghan QC, who is a leading light in this area, has written an excellent article on this case. It sets out the law with real clarity for us laypeople, I think.

It is somewhat surprising – and bold – for an ET to conclude that a “view” held by the senior courts and reflected in judgments spanning 40 years are not worthy of respect in a democratic society, not compatible with human dignity and conflicted with the fundamental rights of others.

This bit from the Karon Monaghan article... is it not the case that trans woman are women/ transmen are men is the philosophical belief that is incompatible with human dignity and the fundamental rights of others?

I'm just wondering what law coerces people to say something that isn't true. Hasn't being transgender been knocked off the mental illness list? And there's no physical proof it exists, no test, no scan, no nothing. So what is it except a philosophical belief?
