I haven’t listened to it yet, but here’s the tweet by Nicky and link:

“ In Part 6 of my Sex & Gender #Carerscast short series I talk to @MermaidsGender CEO @greensusie100 on the exponetial rise of children & young people with GD, many of whom are autistic & the process of seeking a diagnosis for children with GD in the UK.”

Doesn’t that mean about 20% of children with gender identity issues are ASD? That’s consistent with other reports, of it being up around the 25% mark.

I'm really not comfortable with someone who works with children and whose claims for the percentage of them who're on the spectrum is off by a whole order of magnitude being recommended by both the media and the government as a resource, given that for better or worse she's the face and voice of her organization.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 07/07/2020 11:13

If otoh she means that 20% of the kids Mermaids works with are on the spectrum then that just reinforces what everyone worried about childhood transition has been saying for years.

NotBadConsidering · 07/07/2020 11:17

My understanding is that at least 25% of children presenting to the Tavistock are on the ASD spectrum. I think that’s at a minimum, and consistent with clinics around the world.

I often wonder if it wasn't all about gender, what other organisation would be allowed to stand when they quote debunked stats, weaponise suicide , have no idea on the outcomes of the people they see, make up all the stats about autism and underlying issues , and would speak to very youmg children about intimite details of their bodies online and have links to medical staff who were suspended fir running illegal clinics .

They clearly know they are untouchable because no effort is ever made to at least try and be truthful.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 07/07/2020 11:19

If it’s 2% of the general population and 20% of kids-who’s-parents-contact-Mermaids then that is surely a holy-fuck-we-need-research moment for Green?

gids.nhs.uk/evidence-base

There seems to be a higher prevalence of autistic spectrum conditions (ASC) in clinically referred, gender dysphoric (GD) adolescents than in the general adolescent population. Holt, Skagerberg & Dunsford (2014) found that 13.3% of referrals to the service in 2012 mentioned comorbid ASC (although this is likely to be an underestimate). This compares with 9.4% in the Dutch service; whereas in the Finnish service, 26% of adolescents were diagnosed to be on the autism spectrum (Kaltiala-Heino et al. 2015).

So between 10 and 25% generally. General population 2% is a reasonable estimate. It’s one of the major points of contention.

I'm surprised to see this, as Nicky Clarke was firmly on the "TWAW and Glinner is an evil bigot" at one time. So I ignored her podcast. Will have to give it a listen now.

Deltoids1 · 07/07/2020 11:35

I’ve been enjoying this series of podcasts about gender. NC allows the speak time to talk which allows the listeners to form their own opinions about the subject.
For me, SG talking about poor trans girls in girls spaces was my WTF moment.

Its definitely not always a bad thing. In fact when allowed to relax and talk more in an interview without being so defensive by default as you know you have a tough time ahead, they reveal a lot more. And sometimes that's a revelation in itself

Jeeeez · 07/07/2020 21:12

I really recommend all 6 of Nicky's conversations, they're all great. I'm not sure about 30% regretting knee surgery, but SG saying about 25% of girls with gender dysphoria are autistic appears accurate. I now need to look at more information about the Tavistock and Mermaids...always more to learn!

yes, I've been taking the tack that I need to listen to people with other opinions of late. Incase it turns out that in fact, "are we the bad guys?"

So far, we're bloody not.

Susie Green is a parent, not an expert. I'm not sure that you could even say that she is an expert parent.
