Tech giant coming for a Conservative politician: Liz truss

I know most of us are aware of this, but interference in UK politics by US tech companies is hitting the political mainstream. Pretty much all Conservative MPs read Conservative Home.

"Even if there is not algorithmic censorship, many people were concerned last week after Google UK launched into Liz Truss, the Conservative MP, on social media. On June 18 it posted a petition trying to lobby her on the Gender Recognition Act."

I wrote a long email to my MP about this today. I'll copy it here if anyone wants to see it.

Glinner did a fine rant on this:

Not really sure if there's anything to be done. Politicians have been more than happy to let the tech giants off the leash when it served them. They won't get it back now.

It's called "riding the dragon".

There were sober news stories about the mentality of tech companies ten years ago. Absolute determination not to pay taxes or to engage with society in any conventionally meaningful sense, plus the lack of any effective way to tax them, or ensure fairness and honesty or even ensure free speech. They manage so much about our lives now, all over the globe, and they're overwhelmingly run and controlled by rich, highly educated West Coast American men.

No clue what we can do about it now, but I doubt this will be their last intervention in our politics, even though they pay almost no bloody tax.
