Glinner yesterday in Daily Telegraph... shocking!

loveyouradvice · 30/06/2020 15:19

I recognise I may be cross posting but couldnt spot another one.

What is most shocking is their very selective reporting of Mumsnet to demonstrate how "anti-glinner" we are and to support the fact they are positioning him as anti-trans not pro women... Shoddy journalism. Unbalanced and pernicious.

How did Graham Linehan, the creator of Father Ted, become the most hated man on the internet?
The writer's battle with trans activists has cost him his Twitter account and many friends. And it all began with an episode of The IT Crowd
By
Tom Fordy

Linehan is also the co-creator and/or writer of popular comedies The IT Crowd, Black Books, Big Train and Motherland. But his more recent position, at the centre of the trans debate’s most toxic area, has been deeply unfunny. Now Linehan has been permanently suspended from Twitter...

Linehan also caused upset when he compared treatment for trans kids to Nazi experiments. In December 2018 he opposed a Big Lottery Fund grant of £500,000 to trans kids charity Mermaids and encouraged Mumsnet users to complain (“Mumsnetters Assemble!” he wrote). A counter campaign was set up by popular gamer Hbomberguy – real name Harry Brewis – which raised a further £264,000 for Mermaids...

After being suspended from Twitter Linehan took to Mumsnet. In a bizarre, 3.16am post, he complained that he’d violated new rules by using the word “groomer” (“A phrase Twitter recently decided was Not Allowed”) and said that Twitter has “a high-percentage of trans-identified employees” who are silencing feminists and allies who don’t adhere to anti-misgendering rules. There was an ironic backlash as the Mumsnetters assembled.

“This is a female space and I don’t think an entitled male should keep barging in here every time he needs something from us,” said one. “Sorry who are you and why should I care that you’ve been banned from Twitter? You seem to be a man from the looks of it so why are you posting in the feminism forum? This is a female space,” replied another.

Since the suspension, Linehan has been on Parler encouraging “all those who care about free speech” to delete their Twitter.

Terrible article. Stopped reading at inclusive language such as “menstruators”

It's not inclusive to women, is it? Not inclusive to 51% of the population, that's kind of the definition of the opposite of inclusive.

Anyway, being banned from twitter is a badge of honour. It's a misogynistic cesspit and up to 60% of tweets are bots not humans.

Still, I think this article brings sunlight because I think anyone reading it would be questioning a lot of the statements within it.

Eveta · 30/06/2020 16:47

It's a free speech platform. The hard left woke types don't like free speech though, as words can physically injure them. Hence it being dubbed as a right wing platform, as they can't mass report and cancel people for wrongthink.

I got banned for simply pointing out truth isn't hate speech. It doesn't take much seemingly. Need a shiny badge to wear now.

@JamieLeeCurtains

Whatever the decent points, I really don't like the lazy mischaracterisation of the Mumsnet thread.

It's not just bad journalism ... it's something else. Almost like Fordy was fed those screenshots within seconds, or knew about them in some other way, and couldn't arsed to (or didn't want to) research the context properly.

That's what I thought too. Almost as if the posts were written so that they could be included in an article to prove a point that isn't true.
ScrimpshawTheSecond · 30/06/2020 17:04

What a shitty article.

Sorry, Glinner. Happy to have you here.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 30/06/2020 17:06

Almost as if the posts were written so that they could be included in an article to prove a point that isn't true.

Indeed. From a very lengthy thread, it's amazing how this one post was singled out, especially as it was markedly different to both the prevailing posts from long-time MNers and the troll posts.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 30/06/2020 17:06

Remember 'wag the dog'?

JamieLeeCurtains · 30/06/2020 17:12

Yeah, if Fordy isn't complicit then he got wagged by his beard good and hard.

littlbrowndog · 30/06/2020 17:13

Inclusive language. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

contactusdeletus · 30/06/2020 17:18

Haha, what ridiculous cherry picking of the Mumsnet response to Glinner! Statistically speaking, it must be about five per cent of 'netters who don't like him. And even then not one of them was speaking against his gender critical views - they just believed this ought to be a woman only space. I personally don't have a problem with a respectful ally like Graham showing up to fill us in on his suspension, and the vast majority of posters felt the same.

How desperate can you get to try and stretch the truth that far?

megletthesecond · 30/06/2020 17:22

Glinner is welcome here. I'm glad he's speaking up.
Love a decade long lefty MN-etter who can spot a shit stirring troll a mile off.

MaryRaddy · 30/06/2020 17:22

The only thing Twitter is useful for is providing insight into what the general public do not think. If "Twitter" agrees apple pie is nicer than plum pie then you know for certain that actual real people prefer plum pie. Its like the negative for a photo.
Also, the weird bit about seeing him at a party on his phone... I mean!! Crime of the century! Is this supposed to make us feel sorry for him? Think he is some sort of loner?! There was I thinking that if he wasnt wildly drunk surrounded by an audience of salivating reality TV stars singing brilliant kareoke whilst simultaneously saving the world then he must be a total loser. He was as probably booking a fucking uber or something? Who gives a shit anyway?!
This in depth analysis is what counts for journalism these days... FML

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 30/06/2020 17:26

This reads like something out of Penis News Hmm

Glinner knows the score and the truth 👋🍷

Floisme · 30/06/2020 17:30

Oh dear, Tom Fordy, what a lazy piece of work.
How long would it have taken you to check out that thread for yourself?
I thought journalists were supposed to be curious.

SerendipityJane · 30/06/2020 17:35

Daily Telegraph in shit newspaper allegation ...weather to follow ...

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 30/06/2020 17:39

Their star columnist (my spell checker just changed that to colon Isis) aside, I don't think the Telegraph readership is a hotbed of woke liberals. (Bad spell checker Grin).

I worry there is a far darker explanation though, and I'm not usually one to grab the tinfoil and make a bonnet.

Glinner was allegedly banned from twitter for the use of the word groomer, The Baroness was censured after calling Minor Attracted Persons paedophiles. And I thought I detected some breadcrumbs in a Sunday Times article at the weekend about a dodgy politician and his dodgier contact.

Has the Telegraph had a Damascene conversion to liberal values or is this follow the money and throw shit at the people who have noticed?

stillathing · 30/06/2020 17:41

PelicanDeuce · 30/06/2020 17:44

The man is a fucking hero.

Nancydrawn · 30/06/2020 17:47

Parler is technically a free-speech forum.

However, the vast majority of users are quite right wing. Most of Trump's reelection team/family is on there and a large number of right-wing American elected officials and pundits, as are Katie Hopkins and a number of others who have been deplatformed from Twitter.

The CEO was recently so desperate for a popular liberal that he put out a "progressive bounty" of $20k for a left-leaning person with over 50,000 followers to join. No one has.

Oh, and today he tweeted that there are exceptions to free speech on Parler, e.g. you cannot post pictures of your own feces to disagree with others, which apparently people were doing.

Sounds...delightful.

Adirondack · 30/06/2020 17:48

I think @glinner is a bloody hero for what he’s done. Star

prolefeed · 30/06/2020 17:50

Journalistic standards don’t exist these days. It’s embarrassing. I’d love them to be forced to print a retraction though, and for TH to have to grasp that he was used as a puppet. Gullibility isn’t really a great trait for a journo.

Stevienickssleeves · 30/06/2020 17:51

Thank fuck for Glinner. And thank fuck for mumsnet too.

Hmm, thanks.

It’s difficult. This war in truth is creating a lot of “strange bedfellows” situations. I might mosey on over and take a look.

(Ridiculous that Glinner didn’t qualify for the progressive bounty. So that alone makes me wonder how these things are reckoned.)

ArriettyJones · 30/06/2020 17:56

War ON truth^

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 30/06/2020 18:03

Poor Glinner.

I know we're sometimes accused of dick-pandering on here, but he's fought so passionately for us.

Always welcome, obvs. Cake
