Hurrah! Some great news for JK Rowling.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has won in The British Book Awards as the Best Book from the past 30 years.

Well deserved! Let's promote and congratulate her far and wide!

I really like JKR but I think that it's far from the best book from the past 30 years. It's good and has encouraged lots of children to read but there have been many better books over that time.

I would say it's been one of the most influential books (or series of books) in that time, though. Definitely the most famous. I don't recall any other books having release parties, midnight openings etc etc, or shaping a whole generation like HP did.

So it may not be, literary speaking, the best book, but I would say the most... dominant? memorable? Cultural important? I'm not sure what the right word is!

Its a tough one. It is an important book because it inspired a whole generation of children to get reading. I am grateful to JKR for that! However, it isn't very well written so I'm not sure it sits well with me to have it named 'best book' of the last 30 years.

Isn't the answer simply "the most popular"? It's sold 120 million copies. The next closest in the last 30 years is The Da Vinci Code with 80 million. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books

Although am disappointed to see publishers such as Penguin erasing the word 'Women' [sigh]

In terms of its impact on reading and reading habits of children since publication, it probably is the "best book" from the past 30 years.
I'm just delighted that the panel did not change their decision given the current climate.

However, it isn't very well written so I'm not sure it sits well with me to have it named 'best book' of the last 30 years.

Do you remember though, when each book came out and children would read through the night to see what happened next? When I read them all out loud to my children (4 times round for all the books!) I gained a new appreciation for how well the stories held their attention and how funny parts of them were.

I'm surprised it didn't get more coverage, as the 30-year prize was specially to coincide with their 30 year anniversary.
