Am I the only one that finds it odd that when a man gets kicked off twitter for hate speech he runs to a woman's only space to have a cry about it? I though he was an advocate of people finding their own spaces?

It's the Streisand effect. The more publicity we get to the madness of these people the more ordinary people are talking about it. We get a lot more publicity from them behaving like this than if we bored our friends going on about women's rights and they didn't understand that they were under attack. When people see people like Graham Linehan being banned from Twitter suddenly they realise that freedom of speech is under threat and they come on side. Was at outside drinks last night and everybody was talking about JK Rowling. Suddenly everyone felt free to say how disgusted they were that this was being pushed on children in schools.

I'm not a particularly well educated woman (didn't go to uni), live in a very quiet part of the UK..don't read newspapers much, and keep myself to myself...BUT..I want to thank MN for bringing to my attention something that I was completely unaware of! It started when I read about the changes in the law in Scotland regarding the (re?)classification of 'women' completely open mouthed..I read about JKRs battle on twitter agog..I have started doing what she has done and educating myself..I used the link and posted my support to her.
I have started talking to friends and my family about this issue and so many of them were unaware also..In my own small way I am spreading the word..
If I have made mistakes in this post I apologise but I am learning..
What else can I read? How can I find out more? It seems I was ignorant for so long and don't really know where to start..I'm not very computer savvy but I'm learning that too!

The fairplayforwomen website is a good place to start. I actually sent a link to one of the mums I was having a drink with last night because her daughter is up In arms her secondary school has has introduced mixed sex toilets and she is incandescent about it. So I told her there's a lot of support out there if she wants it and sent her the link to their campaign.

To the troll upthread who mentions women only spaces, as a lesbian I can emphatically tell you there have been no women only spaces for many years now.

Everyone knows that the internet is a massive cesspit of child and adolescent grooming. Parents are warned to be vigilant about it.

Yet Twitter decides ‘MAPs’ or ‘paedophiles’ (in old money) are fine to have around, as are people who threaten women with torture and violence and

Yes, your 'friend' is telling lies. If glinner had been doing that and it had been discussed on MN threads there's no way on earth that he wouldn't have been banned.

There are a lot of fake "screenshots" going around with Mumsnet looling fonts being spread by some particularly vicious trolls.

Tell your friend to check everything and believe nothing at first .
