£600k Oxford research project on "trans kids"

Lily Maynard has uncovered an incredible story about a research project at Oxford University, funded by NIHR (i.e. the taxpayer). It was awarded to a very junior researcher with no relevant publications—and despite the NIHR finding serious flaws in the proposal. The PI and the researchers are obviously ideologically biased, e.g. using Helen Webberly to recruit participants. The advisor is an American late-transitioning transwoman who brags about their sexual exploits.

OMG I had to stop reading that link....very worrying that vast sums of money are being given away so carelessly, and for what benefit?

Melroses · 26/06/2020 15:20

I read that this morning.

So many people with such scanty qualifications, experience and standing in all these studies and charities.

Yet they get elevated.

heathspeedwell · 26/06/2020 15:25

Absolutely terrifying.

Great work by Lily Maynard Flowers

The problems should be obvious to anyone who cares to look. The bias, the vagueness (what is a gender-diverse child?), the grown-up men with weird sexist ideas about womanhood obsessing about 'trans kids', the lack of rigour, the involvement of people like the Webberleys even though they have been suspended by the GMC, etc. etc.

So why are we funding this?

A colleague and I are applying to NIHR for research funding (on an entirely different topic) and the process is very, and I mean very, rigorous. It has been out for peer review, revisions have been made, back out for peer review, then we have had to address issues raised by the commissioning panel. There is absolutely no wriggle room and we haven't been approved yet. We are asking for less than a third of the amount of this study. I am mystified as to how this was approved.

Bloody hell
I would like to buy Lily a (stuff) drink, she does great work.

GC yes I have had experience of the process you describe there is no wiggle room & success is by no means assured. Unless you add glitter it seems Hmm
