Will the BBC be banning Mrs Brown's Boys any time soon?

So the Beeb has decided that the appropriation of black culture by white people for comedic effect (Little Britain) will no longer be found on their platforms.
I'm certain now they'll be along to remove Mrs Brown's Boys and Drag Race any minute.

Excellent point.
They've opened a can of worms there.

BaronessFloralBunting · 10/06/2020 01:20

God, I bloody hope so. About as funny as a really bad case of constipation, and just as many gurning faces.

happymummy12345 · 10/06/2020 01:22

I hope not. I love it.

Sparklfairy · 10/06/2020 01:23

It's a very slippery PC slope...

I still don't understand why they've got rid of Little Britain when League of Gentlemen was far worse and the same era if you're going down that road. Although LoG was actually funny Grin

Doyoumind · 10/06/2020 01:29

It is one of the least funny and frankly shittest shows ever, so hopefully.

Ginkypig · 10/06/2020 01:42

Hmm yes it's a very interesting thought.

I suspect this will make for an interesting debate.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 10/06/2020 09:11

Oh god, yes, please do.

And that dude that does the characters - so many of which seem to be female - there's a schoolgirl one I think the show is named after and it's just awful.

testing987654321 · 10/06/2020 09:18

I can't stand it, and thought Little Britain was highly offensive at the time. But I am not a fan of banning things.

It would be better if they just made sure 50% of comedy had actual women on. Then we could have as much bad female comedy as we have bad male comedy.

derxa · 10/06/2020 09:20

I hope so. It's a pile of shite.

Gingerkittykat · 10/06/2020 09:24

I don't think the trans rights activists have come after it yet but I'm sure they will if you give them enough time.

Janaih · 10/06/2020 09:25

We can but hope.

In seriousness, I dont think anything should be banned. I've seen racist language on only fools and horses on the dave channel.

BaronessFloralBunting · 10/06/2020 09:27

Obviously I don't really think anything should be banned.

Heygirlheyboy · 10/06/2020 09:29

It's awful stuff but what would the objection be? (I haven't watched more than 10 minutes so I might have missed something).

Z0rr0 · 10/06/2020 09:58

I don't really think banning is the way, obv, I was just making a point about appropriation of race / skin colour by people not of that race, vs appropriation of gender by people not of that gender. I know many women see drag as very outdated stereotyping of women along the same lines as blackface.
I'll admit I'm conflicted here and happy for people to educate me. We have a long theatrical tradition of men dressing as women (although obv because women weren't allowed on the stage) and I don't think there's anything wrong with pantomime dames for example. But drag does make me increasingly uncomfortable. And yet, again, there's a long history of gay men making a living in comedy clubs dressing as women and I'm not sure I have a problem with that either.
Like I said, happy to be educated.
I don't really have a problem with Mrs Brown's Boys. It's just not my kind of comedy. But why is it ok for men to dress as women for laughs and not for men to dress as POC for laughs?

MoltoAgitato · 10/06/2020 10:01

I did think this. I also have a list of statues I think we should topple because they are of men who were abusive, misogynistic arseholes.

It would appear that violence and direct action actually work far better than playing by the rules. The rules, and the game, after all, belong to the patriarchy.

Heygirlheyboy · 10/06/2020 10:02

I personally wouldn't see a problem with it but I have known of BOC a long time and I think he was originally in panto and he's not gay, you probably know that. Mrs Brown was around before the programme, it's a character he created and played... I can't get offended about it as an act just as atrocious comedy!

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 10/06/2020 10:20

I didn't think I had a problem with pantomime dames, but my kids finally got to an age where I took them to Panto (a couple of different ones - in case I just hit a bad one), and either it's changed since I was a kid, or it all went over my head then, but by god they were inappropriate - really horrendous misogyny, 'jokes' that were well beyond double entendre. Needlessly too - it could have been played for fun so easily.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2020 12:07

Can we get Justin off kids TV too with all his dressing up and dreadful stereotypes?

Can't stand him.

Z0rr0 · 10/06/2020 12:58

Aw, I miss kids TV. #old
I only remember him doing Mr Tumble. Does he do bad women characters too?

Teach small children the art of stereotyping, then spend years telling them not to do it.

Abbccc · 10/06/2020 15:00

What about the Australian comedy? Can't remember what it's called. It's a man dressed up as a school girl.

BaronessRadishFemish · 10/06/2020 15:05

I agree with the er, baroness

MadameMarie · 10/06/2020 15:06

On the grounds of being absolute lowest common denominator shit I wouldn't object.

Not on some cultural Marxism grounds.

Beamur · 10/06/2020 15:10

I think we might be waiting a very long time OP.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 10/06/2020 15:32

That's Chris lilley aka J'aimie Private Schoolgirl, and also Jonah From Tonga with blackface.

Time to write to Sir Les Patterson at the High Commission to complain about Australian Culture, such as it is.
