This article is about how important it is for schools to remain open because closing schools puts girls at risk of genital mutilation and forced marriage.

Fortunately the journalist seems to understand what a girl is.

I ought to clarify that I'm not arguing for schools to remain open during a pandemic, just that as a general point it's really important that girls are able to attend school because it reduces the risk of things like FGM and forced marriage.

On the whole, yes, but FGM stands for 'female genital mutilation', so I did wonder why she refers to this as 'forced genital mutilation' in the first paragraph (but it is the Guardian).

Covid-19 school closures have exposed children around the world to human rights abuses such as forced genital mutilation, early marriage and sexual violence, child protection experts say.
