I'm really only posting this because I didn't even realise Canada had this law.

I think this is something new. Previous incel attackers (like the van attack in Toronto) were charged with murder/attempted murder. An article I read this morning said that this is the first time they’ve actually charged someone with terrorism for this kind of attack (and about time tbh). The same paper also published this article this afternoon:

So I think this is a change in the way police charge the perpetrators of these crimes. One step closer to acknowledging misogynistic attacks as hate crimes maybe? About time either way.

He was angry at women. How did he/ the police know who were women?

It's also pissed me off that the victim who has children and worked in an 'erotic massage parlour' has been named but not the murderer. I get he's underage. What about her though, her kids? I know the sex work is work types will say no probs. But in real life that's not how it works.

My first thought was - well, it's not like any "transphobes" are shooting up massage parlours so why go there? But given that it's Canada and given the insane double standards TRAs have about what counts as violence - I can see it. The accused is said to have engaged in a systemic terrorist campaign targeted at the most vulnerable members of society, and is charged with 30 counts of misgendering and seven counts of being exclusionary.

But science fiction aside, this is a good decision. Incel terrorism (actual violence) is on the increase and it's good that they are acknowledging that these crimes are driven by a specific, albeit incoherent, ideology.

I think it's interesting to consider where you would draw the line between misogyny-motivated terrorism and domestic violence/stalking/rape. All of these actions serve to keep women as a political class, intimidated and subjugated to men. This is the main reason misogyny isn't recognised as a hate crime - it's too pervasive. But now that the possibility of misogyny as a motivation for terrorism has been legally acknowledged - have they let a genie out of the bottle?

Yeah, that's more what I meant. Even without the violence, the fact that a hate crime can now be charged as a terrorism offence could be something we see turned on 'transphobes'.
