Scotland Sex ed lesson - How to be a girl

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/05/2020 18:51

I'm in Scotland. We got sent a link to the P6 (that's Primary 6, 9-11 year olds) sex ed resources today.

This video is recommended as part of the 'transgender' section.

It appears to have been made by an anonymous Canadian mother.

I find it deeply offensive, utterly ridiculous and I can only imagine it would be confusing, upsetting and possibly harmful for any children watching it.

Boys can wear pink without being female. It's so basic!

I will be making a complaint. I signed up for the consultation for these resources, but I can't remember this video being included at the time, or I certainly would have said something then.

Here's the resource page, for anyone who wants to read further.

At the end the mum says: "If a girl can have a penis, what is a girl anyway?"

Yeah. How can we define womanhood, is it one who wears sparkly pink dresses? This seems to be the new definition.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/05/2020 19:11

WTF? Why do TRAs always complain about people reducing it to pink sparkles and Barbie's, when invariably, that is what it is.

FloralBunting · 19/05/2020 19:12

Well that that's creepy AF. What's with the rosary being recited in the background in the first few minutes? Incoherent rubbish.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/05/2020 19:16

Did they really need the penis drawn in? Really?

FloralBunting · 19/05/2020 19:26

Well of course. The video started with arrows pointing to the baby's penis. Everyone needs to know how important penises are. Just like everyone needs to ask 'what is a girl anyway?'

testing987654321 · 19/05/2020 19:46

That bit near the end about feeling like her boy was just a dream was just terrifying. I can't imagine what 10 year olds would make of it.

scotsheather · 19/05/2020 19:48

Seriously? P6 kids are being asked to watch this? Can't wait until the day we simply have "children" of the male and female sex not "boys/girls". Those are the videos we should be making.

LadyDoc1 · 19/05/2020 20:02

My son is in P6 and I can't find any information about whether or not this content is being taught at his school (Glasgow)
Does anyone have any advice on how to check?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/05/2020 20:03

As my DP said, if one child sees that film, it'll be too many.

LatinforTelly · 19/05/2020 20:10

Did you get this today, Scrimpshaw? I'm signed up to receive these updates and haven't had one for a while. I also have a p6 child. Is this stuff being taught yet or are we in a review phase for feedback before it is ok'd to be taught? (I know I should know this, sorry.)

Graffitiqueen · 19/05/2020 20:11

Which council area are you in?

Jintyfer · 19/05/2020 21:02

@scrimshaw That is terrifying. How on EARTH did that even make its way into the Scottish school system as a resource?? That would surely scare any child who's not questioning their gender, who've never given it a second thought (most don't I would imagine) "Something went wrong in mummy's tummy" FFS. And the eerie music. So creepy.

Does it say anywhere which lobby group advised on this? OMG if this comes to Berkshire I'll be ready for it. Thanks for sharing.

Ps I'm using the app right now and have trouble tagging people. (I've only half-tagged you Scrim) Anyone else find the app problematic for this?

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 19/05/2020 21:19

Jesus christ, that's easily one of the most fucked up things I've ever seen!

"the girl alien does all the work and the boy alien sleeps and eats"

"if a girl can have a penis, what is a girl anyway"

The creepy music and the horror movie esque scribbling out of the faces in the photos?!

Sooooo many wtf moment in that video. The mum writing it sounds seriously traumatised and confused, I really hope she gets quite a lot of therapy. Over my dead body would my children be watching that at school.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/05/2020 21:38

Yep, I'm pretty aghast at it. Hard to know where to even start, really.

Dear Sirs and Madams

WHAT THE FUCK?

I think the part where she talks about feeling like her son had been a dream and never really existed is really disturbing. I feel that this woman seems to have mental health issues, and I cannot believe that the govt have, after extensive consultations and careful deliberation, decided that this resource is of a standard and ethic suitable for schools to promote.

I checked the mother's blog - she is on a hiatus now, apparently, after some unexplained but darkly hinted at crisis last year. I'm sorry for her, but again cannot understand how and why this is seen as suitable for educational material.

Graffiti, I'll pm you. Bit concerned it might be a bit outing to say where I am.

Latin, I presume this is now available for teaching, it's how it was presented to us, via the school.

Lowhum · 19/05/2020 21:38

No idea whether this is real or not, but handing a 3 year old that much power is setting them up for a fall.

I don’t understand why the mother didn’t want the child to name themselves Rainbow, I thought kids had the capacity to make life long decisions...

Also, the video reminded me of salad fingers (shudder).

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/05/2020 21:39

LadyDoc1, I can only presume this is Scotland wide. The resource is for all of Scotland, I believe. It's the standard curriculum.

OP posts:
FloralBunting · 19/05/2020 21:58

Seriously - the first couple of minutes of the video have a backing track of a group of female voices repeating the Hail Mary over and over. Adding that to the later plinky plonky music and the disturbing stuff about the little boy who never existed, why in the name of sanity would anyone be showing this to kids?

Yes, the content is ridiculous nonsense, but the tone of the whole thing makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and I've no reason to find the Hail Mary sinister in and of itself.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/05/2020 22:16

Holy fuck, Floral. I was about to gently suggest you needed some fresh air, because I couldn't hear the Hail Marys, but you're right. Very faintly in the background. What the ever living hell is going on?

OP posts:
allthedamnvampires · 19/05/2020 22:21

How did this make its way into the curriculum? Spooky weird claptrap. The bit about deciding who gets to be a girl would have made my 10 year old self very anxious. Even then I understood about safe spaces for women only, which are being eroded through abuse of the ability to self-select gender.

FloralBunting · 19/05/2020 22:22

Trust the Catholic when she says she hears whispered Hail Marys Grin

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/05/2020 22:23

That video really is disturbing, it's like some sort of LSD induced cult recruitment propaganda. Children are often convinced of things that are absolutely false, because their brains aren't finished developing yet and they have very little life experience. I guess it's good the kid didn't spend a year insisting that they were a dog or a horse or something, who knows what insane shit the mother would have done then.

Graffitiqueen · 19/05/2020 22:26

@ScrimpshawTheSecond thanks. I have a p6 and I'm very concerned about this video.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/05/2020 22:26

It's setting people's hair on edge because it's designed to mess with your head. The weird music, the whispering in the background, the pretend children's drawings, the whole thing is an attempt to discombobulate the viewer so their perspective can be manipulated. It's creepy as fuck.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/05/2020 22:38

Here's a podcast from the same mother called 'playdates with Christians'.

www.howtobeagirlpodcast.com/episodes/episode-xxvii-playdates-with-christians

She honestly seems quite disturbed. 'There's this anxious hum in the background all the time' - no shit.

Also, this dress apparently means that there's 'no going back'. Not sure what that means - once a boy puts on a pink dress then his life is changed forever?

Seriously? With all that Hail Mary shit going on in it? I do think Scotland's serious Sectarian issues might well be the solution to this.

Get this in the Old firm football boards. This going on in schools? Both sides will kick it to the kerb
