Hi, can anyone point me to a good resource detailing the history of makeup please? A colleague needs something for a teaching session with 14 year old girls.

A couple from my shelf: "All made up: 100 years of cosmetics advertising" by Penny Dade and "Facing beauty: painted women and cosmetic art" by Aileen Ribeiro.

Lisa Eldridge’s Face Paint is really good.

Cosmetics or makeup? Religious/Ancient Rome, theatre?

What a fascinating subject OP.

Makeup has played such an important role in so many cultures for many thousands of years.

Lisa Eldridge is an expert, has a huge vintage makeup collection and has written Face Paint, as before. There are a couple of YouTube videos of her discussing the history of makeup with a historian (they make the point that the history of makeup is essentially the history of women). Fascinating stuff.
