Pink News in trouble

These are tough times for a lot of publications. I saw this link posted by @ripx4nutmeg on Twitter:

digiday.com/media/if-we-survive-ill-take-it-as-a-win-how-bootstrapped-publishers-are-adapting/

From the article:

Fifteen-year-old, London-based LGBT media publisher PinkNews faces the likely prospect of scrapping its largest event, the PinkNews Awards, scheduled to take place in October, according to CEO Benjamin Cohen.

The company earns 15% of its revenue from events — last year PinkNews brought in $2.3 million in revenue and made $450,000 in profit — but the sponsorship sales made from selling the awards at the start of the year provides important cash flow for the second and third quarters, he said. This year, however, not a single sponsor has come on board and typically typically the company would have received all of its sponsors by now.

Well it’s not a problem for them - they can just identify as rich and successful, surely?!

I was listening to a good podcast yesterday in which during it it was said that when media organisations go for woke clickbait it doesn't end well - it only takes a few ridiculous articles for them to lose credibility and they probably never get it back

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/04/2020 12:04

Gosh, why would anyone not want to sponsor the Pink News awards what with them being such a professional, unbiased, and generally credible news source?

HermioneWeasley · 10/04/2020 12:06

What a terrible, terrible shame

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2020 12:36

Gutted to hear this.

Love that smallest violin pic.

About the awards - it's not strictly the case that organisations buy awards, but they are a good money-spinner for lots of cash strapped publications, especially B2B. Basically they make money three ways. The publication will set up an awards event - so if you're a health care publication, for example, you might do "NHS trust with best use of digital", "NHS trust doing most to involve patients", "NHS trust with most innovative project for reducing wastage" etc (these are made up). Then the NHS trusts who want to enter fill out an entry form, usually accompanied by a small fee, say £50 or £100.

Then the publication draws up a shortlist for each category, and invites all the shortlisted trusts to the Awards ceremony, which will usually involve some food and drink and be hosted by a minor celeb. The nominees will usually have to pay to attend - or they might get one free, and then their colleagues will have to pay. So that's part of how they make their money.

And then each award is sponsored by a different company, such as a bank or an IT company. This is the main way the publication makes money out of the event. In return for the sponsorship, the sponsor gets to attend the event and have their name on the award, plus, presumably, the kudos of being associated with the publication.

So that's it. At a time when publications aren't making much money, it's a good way of bringing in extra revenue. It doesn't mean that organisations are "buying" awards.

Gingerkittykat · 12/04/2020 21:57

C'mon Flora, it's time to stump up some cash to support Trans rights instead of pretending you have ditched a transphobic sponsor who you had finished the partnership with anyway.

TheClitterati · 13/04/2020 08:21

Now a few months of "Pink News sponsored by Flora" is a double whammy I would actually enjoy. Kill them both off together.

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 19:36

I suspect lots of publications that rely on awards for some revenue will suffer. During a recession this is discretionary spend and is often the first thing to be cut.
It is basically pr.
