Journalist Helen Lewis is on a mission to uncover ... The Roots of “Woke” Culture

I'll definitely be giving this a listen. Especially since it's Helen Lewis.

Ooh that’s a definite listen!

nauticant · 23/03/2020 20:26

Or maybe not. Let's see what Johnson has to say instead.

Yes, its going to clash with Boris isn't it.

Melroses · 23/03/2020 20:31

Whoops - the BBC isn't working now Hmm

nauticant · 23/03/2020 20:43

But it's been rescheduled for 9pm. Apart from genuine interest, I'll be listening in to take my mind off the serious stuff we're hearing now.

Yay -she's on Smile

nettie434 · 23/03/2020 21:45

I enjoyed that. She interviewed Selina Todd wghich waa good. I remember reading about the grievance studies (that is an ironic name by the way, not real) articles and watched a few videos. It feels as if thwre is a real attempt to try and rebalance the free speech debate. Here's a link. Programne lasts 30 mins or so:

nettie434 · 23/03/2020 21:47

Bother - did not see you had already done the link Nauticant

AnotherLass · 23/03/2020 23:05

Does anyone have a different link? That one is to Boris

nettie434 · 23/03/2020 23:25

I’ve tried the Analysis website as well as Sounds AnotherLass and it’s the same. I’ve never seen a feedback page on Sounds so I am not sure how to ask them to change it. It will be repeated this coming Sunday at 9.30 pm. It’s a a shame as it is worth a listen.

In the 1990s there was a ‘big thing’ around supporting children’s self esteem at pretty much any cost. I remember one commentator speculating on what the outcome would be for these children who weren’t allowed to be disappointed, upset, or learn to take life’s knocks. I am sure it was dismissed as just a generational ‘what are the youth of today coming to’ type statement. But now we know.

MoleSmokes · 24/03/2020 01:46

The link goes to the Woke Culture programme now:

LindaSmithfanclub · 24/03/2020 11:43

If you subscribe to the Analysis podcast you get the real thing rather than Boris.

Love the description of 'weaponised victimhood' to describe wokeness.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 24/03/2020 15:43

BBC Sounds hve sorted themselves out and its up now.

The telling remark for me was Goldsmiths Momentum Guy patronisingly dismissing the opinions of working-class people who supposedly read tabloid newspapers. (I suspect they don't read any papers.) Classic authoritatrian Marxist false consciousness justification of the people's vanguard. These priviliged middle-class tossers do not understand representative democracy and will never be any good at it.

nauticant · 24/03/2020 19:56

What struck me was that the position of those against the woke mindset was pretty clear and comprehensible, while the position of the woke was rather hard to grasp.

It is those Purity Spirals of the undefinable and obscured again.

I think I will go and listen to it again as it seemed strangely comforting Shock in the current climate. I thought there was a lot of very clear explanation.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 20:24

I've just got to the bit about examining dogs at the dog part to try to figure out how people feel about "queer performativity". Poe's law seems more applicable every day.

LindaSmithfanclub · 24/03/2020 20:30

Yup, Nauticant, his assertion that gender and identity politics will in a few years have been accepted and absorbed and that everyone will have accepted that biology is irrelevant, just as people have learned to accommodate the LGB community, had me screaming at the radio. No – because LGB rights don't clash with anyone else's rights. LGB rights don't deny science and biology and millennia of oppression.

He might as well have said 'I have no interest in women's rights, they don't matter to me.' This is one of the men behind Corbyn's. And then they wonder why they lost the election so badly.

nauticant · 24/03/2020 21:03

One side was saying "self-evident nonsense is accepted without any thought, especially if the right jargon is used" and the other was saying "if you just accept and do what we tell you, then all conflict falls away".

I agree it was very telling. Even if were true, it didn't seem to bother him that this was one of the reasons why many didn't vote labour in the last election. It's as if labour don't want the votes or to represent unwoke people.

nettie434 · 29/03/2020 21:37

Reminder that the repeat is being broadcast now:

"performativity" - mangled English.
