There is an excellent James Kirkup article in the Spectator which praises Jackie Doyle-King and Joanna Cherry for their bravery in speaking out in Parliament. He quotes both and each of them eloquently outline the myriad problems surrounding this issue. He quotes extensively from both speeches.

I fear we are doing harm to girls....I really think we have failed in this House, we have not given sufficient scrutiny and debate to a treatment which, frankly, if it is given out wrong, will do real harm to the boys and girls who go through it
Jackie Doyle-King

So if gender is somehow innate, and that it supersedes sex, the logical conclusion is that women can somehow identify out of our oppression. Many feminists disagree with that, but increasingly, disagreeing with gender ideology has become a dangerous thing. This brings me to the problem of no-platforming and the attempted silencing of well-respected feminist academics
Joanna Cherry

That’s a very good article. I’ll email both MPs in support.

I am very antiSNP but joanna Cherry is excellent. One of the few with a brain. Good for her

Yes. Joanna Cherry's conclusion is worth quoting:

I would like this Chamber, on International Women's Day, to send the really strong message across all the nations of these islands that no-platforming and attempting to silence feminist academics and other women who assert women's rights is wrong

James Kirkup has been pursuing this for years - an excellent, articulate ally to women.

This is so, so important. Sterling work from both MPs just saying these words out loud in Parliament. They’ll be getting huge pushback. I will write too.

Also I appreciate how Kirkup wrote the article mainly via quoting their speeches, feels appropriate here.

“ Now, wouldn’t it be nice to hear some male MPs do their jobs and talk about this too? ”
Well quite.

I also appreciated that he chose to “spend” many of his column inches by quoting women who know what they’re talking about.

Kirkup gets how to be an ally of women.

For anyone who is out of free Spectator articles for the month, or wants to save them, the full set of IWD speeches from the HoC is here - I've not read them all yet but probably should. From a quick skim through there's a lot of good stuff in it, in addition to the sections Kirkup has highlighted.

Chatty and Errol yes, agree with you both about how James Kirkup quotes extensively from the actual speeches. He is a great ally.
