A video of Cynthia Nixon is getting a lot of play (and recognition) on Twitter:

Powerful message. It was that kind of 'be a lady' thing that made me a teenage feminist back in the 70s. Let's hope this does the same for teenagers now.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 25/02/2020 11:23

My mother used to tell me 'you're no lady!' for sneezing when I was ill as a child. Perhaps we can add to that list with further examples.

theflushedzebra · 25/02/2020 11:57

That is a really, really good video.

I'm 49 - and as a young woman, felt the pressure - but nothing like the pressure on young girls today.

How can it have got so much worse? I think porn and instagram have a lot to answer for.

Siameasy · 25/02/2020 12:54

Enjoyed that.
I think about female socialisation ALL THE TIME now I have a daughter.
In my 40s too zebra, agree it was nowhere near as bad for us as it is for young women now. #bekind sums up female socialisation and it can fuck off as far as I’m concerned as it is never ever aimed at men. I’m trying to teach my daughter to be do unto others as you would be done by. Women are already disproportionately kind.
I no longer care about male approval

Just coming on to post this - very powerfully done: Cynthia Nixon is great in the voiceover, but worth highlighting that the words were written by a 22 year old student ...

This is great

Pity the pope clip is there though.

Anyway....do we know if this organisation knows what a woman is? Don’t want to get too excited....!

MonsteraCheeseplant · 25/02/2020 16:33

Yeah it's a good clip. Is it advertising something? What was the "girls girls girls" motif at the end about?

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 25/02/2020 16:35

God, that just made me choke up!
I went out recently with a group of newish acquaintances and was shocked to find out that at least 5 of them out of the group of 8 or so have had cosmetic procedures, boob jobs, face lifts and the like. All were talking about having/getting Botox as though it’s the same as getting a their teeth checked.
I tried to start a conversation about why it’s a shame that society puts this pressure on women and they all looked at me like I had two heads.
I worry for my daughters I really do.

AutumnCrow · 25/02/2020 16:41

Wow. Excellent.

Buddyelf · 25/02/2020 16:44

I’ve watched it several times already and was surprised at how emotional it made me feel.

“ I tried to start a conversation about why it’s a shame that society puts this pressure on women and they all looked at me like I had two heads.”

Where I live is quite rough, not well off. The high street somehow manages to sustain a couple of clinics like this. The fact that I’m not willing to dye a few grey hairs shocks some people.

L1appelDuVide · 25/02/2020 17:06

Wow.
This is good.
