Charity condoning breast binder for 10 year old

MrsSnippyPants · 24/02/2020 16:23

"Recently we were sent screenshots from a concerned mum who had wanted advice about her 10 year old daughter who had been googling breast binders. The mother asked valid questions. Within 2 minutes Mermaids said that binders were safe if used properly. They didn't suggest exploring any other reason why a 10-year-old may be uncomfortable with her developing body. Mermaids stated that if they followed the correct procedure breast binders were safe.

They didn't mention the long list of known side effects (compressed/broken ribs, punctured/collapsed lungs, back pain, damaged breast tissue & blood vessels, blood clots, inflamed ribs). Questions of the psychological impact on her daughter were not addressed."

Thanks for posting.

Shocking advice aimed at a 10 year old.

Melroses · 24/02/2020 17:07

Wow 10 years old is a bit young to be starting with things like binders, or even knowing to.

I see it is Mermaids Hmm

WrathofFaeKlopp · 24/02/2020 17:22

Mermaids.
The charity that shows no shame.

SerendipityJane · 24/02/2020 17:25

Mermaids. The charity that shows no shame.

I'm hoping there isn't an underground activism campaign that deliberately posts such things on various social media forums to cause them to expend a lot of energy needlessly ...

Lordfrontpaw · 24/02/2020 17:25

Maybe Starbucks will make a boobie cookie and sell it.

Babdoc · 24/02/2020 17:27

Surely this is child abuse and should be prosecuted as such?

ThePurported · 24/02/2020 17:29

The charity that shows no shame.

And why would they. Money talks, and they have it pouring in from the Lottery fund, Starbucks and various other useful idiots.

SnuggyBuggy · 24/02/2020 17:31

FFS aren't all 10 year olds a bit put out at their new boobs?

ChattyLion · 24/02/2020 17:36

Good grief. That poor child. Sad
I can’t believe an organisation would be that irresponsible.

OvaHere · 24/02/2020 17:49

I can’t believe an organisation would be that irresponsible.

I can believe it of that organisation. Binders are small fry compared to SRS for 16 yr olds.

Siameasy · 24/02/2020 17:59

Disgusting. That charity exists to authenticate the poor decision making of one person..I hope one day it implodes

Whatisthisfuckery · 24/02/2020 18:18

It’s hard to come up with a response that won’t get me instabanned tbh.Who can we report this too? Surely there must be a governing body who is responsible for checking charities are behaving appropriately? This is a flagrant disregard of safeguarding, in fact it’s worse than that, they’re actively encouraging kids to damage their own bodies. What can we do about this? Mermaids have got away with too much already.

WrathofFaeKlopp · 24/02/2020 18:27

Breast binders = Tight fitting corset-like garments to hinder the growth of breast tissue by compression.

Used for prepubescent girls, encouraged by certain adults who show a blatant disregard for the child's health and well being.

Charity commission complaints procedure forms.charitycommission.gov.uk/raising-concerns/

ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans · 24/02/2020 18:37

Whatisthisfuckery - the charity commission governs charities. Charities must report serious incidents to the charity commission, this could include data breaches, safeguarding etc.

Clymene · 24/02/2020 18:39

I cannot believe that a charity that has zero understanding of safeguarding gets lottery money

Breast binders for girls are used so that the girl can mimic being a boy.

The process starts as:
Pretence
Imitation
Deception
Denial

The girl will never become a boy.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 24/02/2020 18:53

Jesus. I bought minimiser bras and tried bandaging (which doesn't work very well) - thank god binders/the internet wasn't freely available.

10 year olds for gods sake. Binding their chests so they can't breath properly. It's just one step down from footbinding (it's just to constrict growth, rather than actively requiring you to break ribs). This is not safe, it is not reasonable.

10 year olds should be sympathised with, should be supported mentally and physically, not maimed.

bellinisurge · 24/02/2020 18:55

Jesus fucking Christ. Breast binding. Should be considered assault.

BovaryX · 24/02/2020 18:59

MrsSnippy
Thank you for posting this. It is absolutely shocking that a charity which wields such influence is giving advice about breast binding aimed at a 10 year old child. It's astonishing that this is going on in the 21st century UK.

SomeDyke · 24/02/2020 19:08

So is this 'it's safe' line somehow different to the 'some transboys might not be able to do sport cos they're binding and it restricts breathing' advice that I saw elsewhere as being peddled in schools?

Also, a quick Google gives you:
"Unsafe binding may lead to permanent deformation of the breasts, scarring, and lung constriction and long-term binding may adversely affect the outcome of a future mastectomy. In one study, 97.2% of those surveyed had some sort of health problem caused by binding."

So, if 97.2% of those surveyed had health problems, this says it really isn't safe, or if there is a 'safe' way to do, at least 97% of those who bind haven't got the message............

97% is an enormous number of females with health problems, so what is the supposed justification for not saying, don't do it, it is harmful?

Especially since, like many others, I would have been one of those 10-11 year olds looking for a binder if I'd known they existed. It is just shameful if this is the best advice we have for young girls with such body issues.............

littlbrowndog · 24/02/2020 19:11

It really is. A 10 year old girl. Being told how to bind her breasts. FFS

I mean WTAF is going on in pure view and being funded for millions of pounds by a charity who tell the parent of 10 year old girl how to bind her breast

Germ1360 · 24/02/2020 19:11

Clymene ... Remember kids co.?

Lordfrontpaw · 24/02/2020 19:12

I remember voicing concerns about them and being made to feel like I’d just admitted to drowning kittens.
