All fawning and inclusive and impactful blah blah. How important it is to use preferred names and pronouns for trans inclusion etc..

What do I do? Do nothing? Post a response on the ‘FB’ post? DM HR direct highlighting concerns? Send HR an article(s) which can articulate concerns better than I ever can?

Help wise MNs.

Mermaids not long ago had a data breach. You could mention that or the online predator who was found in their children only chat room. Or the surgery on the CEOs child aged 16. Anything will provoke a 'robust' discussion so obviously be prepared.

Double3xposure · 10/02/2020 19:48

I’d be concerned about any charity that tells GNC children and children who may turn out to be gay / lesbian that they are wrong and need medication and surgery.

Though I don’t know how you raise that with HR. Probably better to focus on concerns about safeguarding as PP suggested .

How about mentioning the Chatty Cafe mental health initiative at competitor Costa. Who pay tax in the UK.

TheSteveMilliband · 10/02/2020 19:50

The equalities commission submission they made last year is eye opening. Advocating that children should not undergo any psychological intervention, have access to criss sex hormones, said workers at gids should be "audited" complaining a child had been told they could t actually change sex.

D&I?

BatShite · 10/02/2020 19:58

I wouldn't post directly on it, chances are it will end up a huge argument. I would send them information about mermaids though, as I do with anyone who praises them. Some read it (or ignore it I guess) and still fawn, which I find awful when its clear they are contributing at the very least to abuse of many children. But still, yey, progressive!!!

I always always point out the homophobia, and usually get told its not homophobic to say gay people should shag people of the opposite sex else bigot Hmm

GenderIsBollox · 10/02/2020 19:59

Diversity, inclusion. That very fashionable bandwagon , which Others have hitched onto with their hidden agendas, and has so much momentum it doesn’t look like it will stop anytime soon.

Thanks MN, I vaguely know the backstory and know mermaids have been involved with training/ confusing children in schools.

Any good links to articles please? So that I can email those and not give my own opinions/ take on this as such?

Unless you are senior in HR or D&I do as others have advised and don’t challenge this announcement head on! There are other ways to support vulnerable communities and maybe suggest an alternative?

I know oneepisode. My job is at stake.

Im thinking of something passive aggressive like, ‘glad I grew up in the 70s/80s when girls can have short hair ( boys can wear makeup) and not Made by society to feel uncomfortable with who they are, seems like we have regressed into sexist stereotypes.....’

But I still find it hard to accept that the handmaidens are either hard of critical thinking, or they really believe this!?

Or the surgery on the CEOs child aged 16

This.

It is illegal in this country at 16 and I can’t get my head round how the mother is accepted and lauded with Mermaids ideology being propagated in school to our children. Yet we are seen as the bigots.

We all have to use euphemisms to avoid a knock from the police which belies the reality of these operations and the lifetime consequences for children.

OP - not sure how you deal with this. Douglas Murray (Telegraph) and Madeleine Kearns (National Enquirer) wrote about this at the weekend which might provide some inspiration.

Perhaps a faux naive ‘hey HR- just checking - Is this the same as in the a telegraph this week...’ ?

Either way - their work on this topic in general is well worth reading if you haven’t before.

Hi Gender I don’t think it will have the effect you want.. when senior people who think of themselves as well informed and intelligent take a position it can be difficult to shift them.
We all have our own embedded ideas and it is hard to recognise them in ourselves. A silly example, I was listening to a radio presenter today, Dr Adam Rutherford, who I’ve read and heard and liked before, and realised he’s not white. I’m white. I don’t think of myself as racist.. but I had definitely assumed he was too without there being any basis for that assumption at all.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 10/02/2020 20:25

I meant national review - oops!

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/02/2020 20:37

It's the quiet word that they might want to take a careful look into Mermaids before endorsing it... I was interested not long ago talking to a colleague from another company who I'd never have a GC conversation with, he mentioned Mermaids with a wince and a dropped tone while discreetly mentioning they'd had some liaison at an event suggested and had stepped quickly and quietly away. He and that business aren't people I'd have expected to know much about it. The word is getting out.
