I've just seen an interview on twitter with Laura kuenssberg with RBL where she is pushed on self ID and the clip ends with her saying self ID should be the law.

Self ID is Labour Party policy, written into the manifesto. I guarantee that every candidate will say the same.
The miracle is that the BBC is asking the question. That wouldn't have happened 6 months ago.
Labour has sold it's soul to the Woke brigade, and can't get it back.

Lordfrontpaw · 22/01/2020 19:54

There’s always been a part of labour that has been just plain old bonkers. It’s just really got a hold now and I hope they can dig it out (but it’s like Japanese knotweed).

ThinEndoftheWedge · 22/01/2020 20:02

I thought LK was quite methodical in ensuring RLB explicitly answered the self ID question.

Clearly LK knows this is an issue.

Has LK implied whether she is GC?

FreedomOf · 22/01/2020 20:17

OK Labour you have one chance now to win back huge swathes of female voters. RLB is out - over to you Kier. There will be initial howls and screams of transphobia but so many silent people will breathe a sigh of relief and might vote for you again if only you’d stand up for sex-based rights. It doesn’t require ‘erasing’ trans rights or denying their trans existence - it’s just a matter of balancing their rights with the rights of women. FGS I want to get back to normal life and not spend so much of my time and mental energy battling against this insanity!

nauticant · 22/01/2020 20:25

But I did think that getting RLB in and have her spend a couple of years withering away as the continuity Corbyn leader might actually have helped tackle Labour's Japanese knotweed problem.

GeordieTerf · 22/01/2020 20:31

Can you imagine any of these people debating “what’s a woman?” with Putin or Trump? They just wouldn’t because they know it’s a load of rubbish.

ApplejackCriesOnTheInside · 22/01/2020 20:31

Self ID is Labour Party policy, written into the manifesto The manifesto that voters rejected. No one is obliged to stick with it.

PermanentTemporary · 22/01/2020 20:32

I don't think being gender critical now is a vote winner at all. I think theres no evidence that the issue swung the vote of more than a tiny grouping.

I think having been gender critical now might be a good thing in the future. Or it might not. I feel pretty gloomy about the future having spent a bit of time on the alleged 'rational wiki'!

LuisaRey · 22/01/2020 21:02

Labour you have one chance now to win back huge swathes of female voters

Really? That would make the likes of Long- Bailly and the other Momentum Marxists an attractive prospect?.

Self ID is only a tiny part of what is wrong with the Labour Party.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 22/01/2020 21:22

Nandy, Thornberry and Starmer need to be pinned down on this too.

"Do you think anyone should be able to change the sex on their birth certificate? And immediately be legally recognised for all purposes as the opposite sex?"

That needs to be the question.

PermanentTemporary · 22/01/2020 21:28

Why? Why pin people down publicly to a single position that will cause a massive twitter storm whichever way they go?

Choose a candidate you think has potential and lobby them. Dont ask them to make a public stand because either they won't and will be weakened by it, or they will and will be weakened by it. Institutional capture isn't a game - it's happened. Fighting back wont happen overnight. Grassroots work with organisations like WPUK and LGB alliance is much more effective imo.

FreedomOf · 22/01/2020 21:33

Of course it’s not going to right all the wrongs but for me personally this at least gets them out the starting gate.

HorseWithNoLangCleg · 23/01/2020 08:39

Sir Kiera Knightly Starmer

Fucking priceless!

That has really cheered me up after the LangCleg debacle.

Lottapianos · 23/01/2020 08:44

'Either way, I can't see Labour ever getting my vote again. And as I don't trust the Greens or the LibDems on women's issues, and wouldn't vote Tory if there was a gun against my head, I shall pour myself a whiskey and try to resign myself to being disenfranchised.'

You are NOT alone. Although I will literally dance a jig if Starmer or Nandy come out on the side of sanity on this issue. I would love to vote for Labour but self ID is the hill I will die on

Childrenofthestones · 23/01/2020 09:48

Having lived in Liverpool through the Derrick Hatton and Militant Tendency years I can't say I'm surprised that Marxists getting their hands on a parties power levers leads to this. They'll be at least a generation in the wilderness.

AndNowItsHappeningInMine · 23/01/2020 10:09

I'm gutted. I don't think I will be able to vote in this leadership election at this rate.
Why is everyone so quick to capitulate women's rights?

HorseWithNoLangCleg · 23/01/2020 10:10

...and, yeah, right now Labour are shite and I've usually voted for them.

The self(ish) ID thing has really put me off them.

AsCoolAsLangCleg · 23/01/2020 22:28

It's the fact they can't even be bothered to think about women's rights that makes me rage.

SunsetBeetch · 24/01/2020 08:03

"42:42. Depressing stuff, I didn't know about this. Nandy simply dismisses even the issue of physically non-transitioned males being given self-id access to women's prisons. "

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/01/2020 09:23

Is she coming on for a web chat anytime soon? Asking for a friend.

DickKerrLadies · 24/01/2020 10:26

I feel like I should almost be impressed at how the Labour party seem to have realised that being in power as we leave the EU is a stupid idea and how they're obviously deliberately coming out with anything that makes them look ridiculous and unelectable in order to avoid it.

It's a bold strategy though...

HorseWithNoLangCleg · 24/01/2020 11:36

Excellent analysis, Dick.

Tootsweets23 · 24/01/2020 11:38

Craig Brown in Private Eye this week on RLB was majestic. Really captured the vacuity of her statements.
