Ross Tucker has posted this on Twitter.
Not read it all, but seems conclusive re advantages of biological males, effects of hormones etc.

“Biological men, or adolescent boys, have an advantage over women, or adolescent girls, in almost all athletic contests.
22. As one team of researchers has recently written, “Virtually all elite sports are segregated into male and female competitions. The main justification is to allow women a chance to win, as women have major disadvantages against men who are, on average, taller, stronger, and faster and have greater endurance due to their larger, stronger, muscles and bones as well as a higher circulating hemoglobin level.” David J. Handelsman, Angelic L. Hirschberg, et al., Circulating Testosterone as the Hormonal Basis of Sex Differences in Athletic Performance, 39:5 ENDOCRINE REVIEWS 803 (2”

“ With respect to muscle mass and strength, Knox et al. found that “healthy young men did not lose significant muscle mass (or power) when their circulating testosterone levels were reduced to 8.8 nmol/L (lower than the IOC guideline of 10 nmol/L) for 20 weeks. Moreover, retention of muscle mass could be compensated for by training or other ergogenic methods. In addition, the phenomenon of muscle memory means muscle mass and strength can be rebuilt with previous strength exercise making it easier to regain muscle mass later in life even after long intervening periods of inactivity and mass loss.” (398)
129. Indeed, Knox et al. observe that oestradiol—routinely administered as part of hormone therapy for transwomen—is actually known to increase muscle mass, potentially providing an additional advantage for these athletes over women.”

Great piece.

I'm always s banging on about this but a male teen's lung capacity can be the same as an adult female.

It's probably only things like shooting? (No idea) And dressage? (Guess) That there may be a level of equality.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/01/2020 20:17

Cross post; the muscle part is VERY significant.

ESP when considering a certain cycler.

Males also have a higher cardiac output, larger lungs and higher oxygen carrying capacity than females, and their narrower pelvis and broader shoulders make them more efficient at both running and throwing. These things do not change when males take female hormones - they do not shrink their hearts and lungs or lose height or shoulder width, and they retain their higher proportion of fast twitch muscle fibres.
They categorically should not be competing against women, however they might self identify. And in contact team sports (such as rugby) or fighting (such as boxing) they can and do cause serious injury to female opponents.
As a doctor, I can’t understand why national and international sporting authorities are even considering allowing this. It flouts safety, logic, science and common sense.

This infographic is handy.

this graphic illustrates it quite clearly (from boysvswomen.com)

No no no silly. Women just need to try harder. If they really really put their mind to it they could beat men.

justcly · 12/01/2020 01:17

Seems to me the biggest advantage of males in sport is that they are allowed to compete against women who have no right to protest. Hmm

mcduffy · 12/01/2020 10:37

The running graphic top right is interesting. My DH is a decent club runner. If he was a woman he'd be professional/top 20 women in the UK. He's top 2,000 for the men. But yes, the women aren't trying hard enough Hmm 1% out of the top 2k runners is pretty conclusive.

quixote9 · 13/01/2020 07:28

The identifying stuff doesn't get applied to any other group. A heavyweight boxer can't identify as a welterweight and grab all the championships. A college basketball player can't identify as a kid and play 10th graders.

But the differences in bodies are about as great as what they expect women to just suck up and deal with. It's only ever women who are treated like that.

Which tells you everything you need to know. It's not about trans athletics. It's about garden variety misogyny.

steube.house.gov/media/press-releases/steube-introduces-bill-protect-women-and-girls-competitive-sports

'WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Greg Steube (FL-17) introduced the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to ensure that women and girls are allowed a fair playing field in competitive sports by prohibiting the use of Title IX funds to support women’s sports in which biological male athletes are allowed to participate against biological women athletes.

“With the House passage of H.R. 5 earlier this Congress, women and girls participating in competitive sports across the country are at risk of losing the equal playing field they were guaranteed by the Education Amendments of 1972,” said Congressman Steube following the introduction of the bill. “We must protect our female athletes from being forced to compete against biological male athletes in competitive sports.”'
