Some highlights (for context Webberley is having a meal with a transwoman)

She showed me photos of her a few years ago. She was then sporting an impressive, thick wiry beard, and bushy eyebrows. But when I looked at the woman sitting beside me, I saw soft fine skin and prettily shaped brows, with highlighted cheek bones and manicured fingernails. I had no doubt that she was a woman.

I know what an amazing wife she has the potential to be – funny, caring, interesting

Nope. No gender stereotypes to see here...

Indeed. Work hard enough on your appearance, and girls, you too may be allowed to be a male's sidekick, help meet and facilitor! All the joys! You've made it!

Cos it's not like you're actually a real person with a valid life of your own or anything.

I get Webberly is slinging the word 'wife' around purely to signal, but they clearly have no concept of how superior, how patronising and how devastatingly sexist they come across. Women don't pat other women on the head like this and tell them they'll make wonderful wives. She isn't signalling what she thinks she is.

Interesting that she didn't have a long history of gender dysphoria, and that her sexuality has also changed (assuming that as a man he had relationships with women, and now as a transwoman is attracted to men)... is it really more acceptable to be trans these days than it is to be gay?

(Lurked for a few weeks, first post.. hi)

littlbrowndog · 17/12/2019 13:15

🙋‍♀️ Sansgender hey

littlbrowndog · 17/12/2019 13:16

Hope your skin is lovely and soft and them unruly brows tamed

That is a woman.

Xiaoxiong · 17/12/2019 14:33

I'm always reminded of Janet in Rocky Horror saying dreamily, "Just an hour ago she was plain old Betty Monroe - now she's Mrs Ralph Hapschatt..." and Brad "everyone knows Betty's a wonderful little cook".

That was 1973 Sad

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/12/2019 14:48

that her sexuality has also changed (assuming that as a man he had relationships with women, and now as a transwoman is attracted to men)

I assumed that as meaning before transition they were heterosexual, and after transition became a lesbian...

ItsAllGoingToBeFine ah yes, you're probably right.. this is stuff is confusing 😆 if you're still attracted to the same people, is that really changing your sexuality though?

OldCrone · 17/12/2019 17:04

I assumed that as meaning before transition they were heterosexual, and after transition became a lesbian...

But...

She told me how her sexuality has changed and she wonders whether she will ever be able to find a man to share her life with. I know what an amazing wife she has the potential to be – funny, caring, interesting – but I know she still has one potential disadvantage, something that might put men off.

It's interesting that this is described as changing sexuality. It's almost as though Helen Webberley doesn't believe that people can actually change sex.

Here's a lovely article on 1950s housewife advice - the good doctor could have little leaflets with the key points ready to share...

What sin did the removed posts commit? Confused Honestly can't figure it out any more.

OldCrone · 17/12/2019 18:13

What sin did the removed posts commit?

I presume that we're no longer allowed to say that over 90% of 'transwomen' have male genitalia. But that's a fact, so are facts now banned here?

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 17/12/2019 18:20

Oooooh. I am being monitored.

Wonder if that is a strike? I forgot how to log into the email. It's like Schroedingers strikes round here... Grin

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 17/12/2019 18:21

I made a joke. Jokes often put you on dodgy ground. Grin

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 17/12/2019 18:27

I didn't mean monitored by MN btw. I mean The Others...

Michelleoftheresistance · 17/12/2019 19:21

That broke guidelines? Seriously? Hmm

Love to hear the justification for that one! Women absolutely no making slightly crude jokes when discussing things on line that are really bloody offensive.

Be abused quietly . Good girls.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 17/12/2019 20:17

I made a joke. Jokes often put you on dodgy ground.

That’s because you were talking bollocks. Literally. Grin

Yes - what happened? In 1973 people were taking the piss out of these old stereotypes. Now nearly 50 years later we’re meant to believe they override biology.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/12/2019 22:39

So wait, I'm not a good wife because I don't get manicures or put highlighter on my cheekbones?

This woman is either sexist to the bone or clever enough to know how to market to people who are.
