She's a second wave feminist (in her 80s now) and lots of her feminist friends (same age) think TWAW. She is very not convinced about that! Her 'normal' friends are oblivious to the whole thing, so...

She thought Jeremy C was fantastic, loved all his policies, thought the right wing press influenced everyone into thinking he was incompetent, and (I have tried not to talk about this one too much for fear of disagreement) feels that the anti-Semitic thing was driven by a misunderstanding born of being anti-the-bad-stuff-israel-does. I have consistently replied with 'but he was unelectable' to avoid in-depth examination.

Today I tried to explain why I think Momentum are A Bad Idea, and have struggled to explain all the connections and links between all of what's going on.

She is even more confused now - she was a Humanist in the 60s and aghast at Alice. I can't find a succinct article (or maybe a diagram or a flow chart?) explaining the names and who is connected to who here.... (lots of 2018 articles on google.)
Ta wise ones

She should be confused because Corbyn is from the old school socialist materialist left tradition, while Momentum thinks it's socialist but adopts a neoliberal individualist view of social issues based on queer theory.

They should never have been hand-in-hand but it seems Corbyn, McDonnell et al were prepared to sacrifice social stuff because Momentum was on board with their economic platform.

Aha, stealth, like it was with the Greens at al

Lang so many of your posts over the last few days have been lightbulb moments for me Flowers

This. I get really annoyed when I hear all the "you just don't like Corbyn /you can still vote for the policies even if you don't like Corbyn". I did, actually, really like him. I voted him in. I'm just now extremely disappointed by him and hate momentum.

On the anti Semitism charges this might change her mind.

morningstaronline.co.uk/article/f/wpuk-fringe-report

' The protest against WPUK’s A Woman’s Place is At Conference event was endorsed from the platform at Momentum’s The World Transformed event, leading to a larger turnout against the meeting, but protesters were heavily outnumbered by the 100 or so women and a few men who braved the demo and attended.'

Pencils, Lang. Another lightbulb switching on here too. 💡

The momentum candidate for Rother Valley protested against Spearmint Rhino being closed for licensing breaches. Very socialist!

Sentiment reciprocated. You're a Star.

LangCleg · 16/12/2019 16:54

I think this election boils down to it wasn't the economy, stupid.

I really don't think tax and spend had much to do with it. It was a wide variety of socio-cultural reasons as we're discussing on the Douglas Murray thread.

Honestly, OP, it's no wonder your DM is confused.

NotTerfNorCis · 16/12/2019 17:20

I was a Corbyn supporter, and at one stage I felt confident that he'd have nothing to do with this gender bollox. One of the big disillusionments came when I was attacked by TRAs - one a dubious, clearly unbalanced individual who is now well known on Twitter - who tried to get me expelled from a Corbyn-supporting group. They failed, but it left me with a very bad taste.

Does nobody have a good explainer on this though? I hope there is something from one of the GC journalists soon

The piece by Janice turner might help, there's a thread on that.

missproportionate · 17/12/2019 10:32

Thanks Errol but I can't see it? I have a Times subscription and can't see anything obvious and recent from her?

Thread including link. It's not about TRA connection as such.
If you've got a times subscription there's been a lot of analysis in the last few days - I can't find it now but there was a piece in the Sunday Times by someone from the New Statesman (a left leaning paper but he had refused to endorse Corbyn)
