a world where women are either the sole species or are so in charge that man are superfluous.

I have read The Power by Naomi Alderman but I don't mean that sort of book.

I'm not looking for fiction where women are dominant because they are themselves supressing men - more gentler stories where women are the sole species or are in charge for external reasons.

Herland by Gilman
Virgin Planet by Anderson

Ammonite by Nicola Griffith.

There's the Marags in David Eddings Belgariad, but then they get exterminated for also being cannibals and having lots of gold, so that might not be what you're looking for....

The Eden trilogy by Chris Beckett is worth a look. The first book Dark Eden meets your criteria to a T. The second and third expand and explore the theme.

A very long time ago I read the short story Consider Her Ways by John Wyndham - I was a big John Wyndham fan as a teenager, but he seems out of fashion now. Anyway, that is set in a future society exclusively made up of women. I enjoyed it at the time but no idea what I'd think of it now.

The Eden trilogy is fantastic. The over-arching theme of the books is how stories come into being to explain the world and how in a patriarchy women's stories get overwritten by men's.

Last one, Glory Season by David Brin.

Andrei Tchaikovsky's Children of Time also fits your bill although the protagonists are spiders.

I'm not selling it well am I? If you like science fiction it's excellent.

DorothyParkersCat · 08/12/2019 18:49

LOL @ the protagonists are spiders.

I was thinking more human and ideally good literature/ good writing that is recommended too rather than just a plot that fits the bill.

Children of time is fantastic!

What a condescending reply.

Children of Time envisages the colonisation of planets for use by refugees from earth. The main scientist is a woman. Due to a technical problem the colonised planet allows the development of a highly intelligent matriarchal society.
