Anyone see the Irish Late Late Toy Show?

It’s an episode of a chat show that’s fine every year, and has loads of kids trying out toys etc. for Christmas.
Tonight there was an eight year old girl with short hair who was talking about being bullied. There are literally thousands of tweets backing her, and saying how brave she is etc. After a quick look, I see her mother made a post saying that the child wants to be a boy and she’ll stand by her.
I suppose I’m worried that this poor child is going to be used by certain groups to try to prove something. I hope she’s not pressured into any major decisions at such a young age. Why can’t she be a girl who likes to dress like a boy, and have short hair...that was literally me for years, but back then it didn’t mean I should be a boy.
I just hope that she’ll be left alone to just grow up and decide who she is in her own time.

Jesus - my sister had the short hair, wore the ‘boys’ clothes and toys, and even had a boy name when we played. She’s a woman for gods sake!

I saw it. The kid was great. A little girl who likes her hair short, loves her Pokemon/Picachu characters, carries lip gloss and a worry stone in her back pack and talked about being bullied for being a "weirdo". There was a strong message that "It would be boring if everyone was the same" and it was really played as a call-out for acceptance and a message to bullies to just stop. It was only today that I saw a report that her mum said Sophia had said she wanted to be a boy. But in the same article she repeatedly referred to her as her daughter and there was no mention of more than the child's statement. But like the OP when I saw that I immediately thought she and her experience run the risk of being hijacked. I hope to god that child and her parents are left alone.

I heard some of the 98FM interview with her mother - it was definitely all girl, daughter, she, etc. and a general no-fuss message that they were letting Sophia express herself how she wanted and if she changes her mind again later that's fine too. I didn't get any woke vibes, just parents trying to do the best for their child.

Sophia was great on the toy show though, and for once I can't fault Tubs on the whole interaction. Good luck to her and I hope she's not made a poster child for something she doesn't represent.

There are so many comments about her being transgender going around the place. All I saw was a little girl with the kind of short hair that plenty of young women have and who liked pac-man and pokemon.

That's what worries me. Right now, it sounds like she's being given the space to change her mind if she wants without it being a big fuss either way. Great, since chances are she will.

But if she's made into a transgender poster child, she's going to be under a lot of public pressure to stay as one because "desisting doesn't happen".

I just hope she's left alone. No child should be under that kind of scrutiny.

We've gone so far backwards. When I was young, Sophia would just have been considered a tomboy, no-one would have batted an eyelid and such normal childhood differences would never have been worthy of radio discussion.

Yes I saw it and I thought she was great. Reminded me of me As a child. I also immediately worried for her and the potential hijacking of her story.

There have been loads of FB posts about this too....people are calling for Sophia to be on the Ellen show etc. On one of them someone commented to just leave her alone to be a child, and let her decide when she's older. Her mother came on and said she was annoyed by this, that Sophia wants to be a boy etc. It would be for the best to just leave her be, and stop publicizing the kid.
