Feminist Good Causes for the Holidays

Wise FWR,

I’m thinking about what to get feminist women for the holiday season. Tempted to go with homemade cards and donating money to good causes in their name/honour.

What are some excellent, proper women-focused charities or causes I could give to? I don’t have a lot of money, but would like to try and support a few different ones and I think it would be nicer than anything from the shops...

Thank you for any suggestions!

I'm going to see if my local refuges accept hampers/gifts for the women and children staying there over the Christmas/New Year period.

For the children, I will be donating years worth of toys and clothes I have hoarded (washed and cleaned up) plus bags of sweets from Poundstretcher etc and, for the women, clothes (some designer) I no longer wear, new clothes, food treats, beauty treats. Boots do 3 for 2 offers so that is quite good.

Will be donating to:

Susan Evan's fighting fund (very important! 12 days to go)

Kate Scottows fighting fund.

Vancouver Rape relief.

Refuge.

Will need recommendations for books to buy the young women in the family on self-esteem/feminism/success. They'll be getting those, plus treats.

Wonderful!

Thank you SO much for these suggestions. I’ve never been to Horton, but it looks lovely (how to organise a trip there?!)
There’s a few women in my life who are still a bit too intimidated by the conversation about women’s rights, so I’m not sure about whether giving to fighting funds would be right for them... Do you think maybe nia or FiLiA might be okay instead?

Also! Do we know if any feminist groups are selling 2020 calendars?

Yes, would love to hear suggestions, too.

I’ve heard great things about Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez, and am thinking maybe along the lines of Mary Daly or Andrea Dworkin?

Great idea for a post OP. Having come into some cash I'll be donating to

Treesisters - feminism and fighting climate change combined!

The crowdfunder that has two sisters who were raped by the same man fight the gagging order he is trying to place on them

And Susan Evans - I'm gripped to see how that one turns out, following Maya and Harry

And LGB Alliance which I think will be pivotal is turning the juggernaut around.

Invisible Women is great! Though I am still trying to persuade DH to read it, but I am sure he'd find it interesting if he did.

Spartacus - what a great store for a good cause!

My family asked me what I want, so I’m putting on my wish list: donations to those crowdfunders/LGB Alliance and the Detransition Advocacy Network, that calendar, and I’d quite like to be signed up as a “friend of FiLiA”... Sounds like I’m now finding more ideas for myself instead of other women! Blush
