Prostitution argument - are either of us right?

A colleague yesterday was telling a 'funny story' about how his brother went to a prostitute in Amsterdam.
I walked off because I found his story unfunny and crap. I just feel prostitution is basically some sort of coerced rape.
Mentioned it to my husband who got defensive saying I couldn't just accuse people of rape for doing something I disagree with. He droned for about 20minuutes (at which point I literally fell asleep) about women called high class prostitutes who choose to make lots of money yadd yadd yadda. Didnt let me get a word in edgeways.
Hes an expert debater bore now I feel conflicted about my original thoughts?
Can anyone sort of clarify this for me?

I don't think prostitution is coerced rape but I think it's disgusting and should be illegal everywhere.

The existence of a tiny number of willing "happy hookers" doesn't negate the experience of the vast majority of women trapped in the sex trade whose circumstances mean that they cannot give meaningful consent. Penetration of the body by a penis in the absence of consent is rape. Your husband is a dick and its is not being an "expert debater" to drone on and not let the other person get a word in, it is overbearing, arrogant and arsey. Your DH is wrong and you are right.

@UhareFouxisci in this particular situation though, it is an option for these women.

It's difference when women are trafficked for sex and in that instance I 100% agree with you.

ZingZangZong · 07/11/2019 15:14

Yes. I think its the concept of meaningful consent that I was trying to grasp and communicate to him.

This is a good site, with lots of info

Your mansplaining H is ignorant and droning on for 20 mins expressing views that demonstrate his ignorance of the issue was NOT “expert debate”, it was just rude and domineering!

Loopytiles · 07/11/2019 15:47

I don’t necessarily agree with you that having sex with a prostitute equates to rape, but agree that it’s not truly consensual.

It concerns me that rather than being pissed off with your H you’re questioning yourself.

Also, it was inappropriate of your colleague to tell that story at work.

Amsterdam has a massive sex trafficking problem

Your husband and the colleague are misogynistic idiots.

TipseyTorvey · 07/11/2019 16:06

I think until your DH or colleague could cheerfully and honestly say they'd be happy for their daughter or sister to be a prostitute they have to accept its not a desirable or happy place to be. For every Billie Piper (forget the name of the character she portrayed) high class hooker there are 1000s of women who have to do this to pay rent and feed their children. It's grim and sad all round.
