'What an amazing line up of speakers for the launch of the SNP #womenspledge group - Margaret Lynch, founder of Glasgow Rape Crisis, @joannaccherry, Cllr Caroline McAllister, Rhona Hotchkiss, former Governor of Cornton Vale Women’s prison and @JoanMcAlpine'

This is heartening.

Article in the Hootsmon, here.

This looks very promising. Great line up, fantastic that they've got so many women pledged to support them too.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 13/10/2019 20:08

And, lastly - am I allowed to post links to petitions? Not sure. The womens' pledge for SNP members and supporters, is an avaaz petition, if you'd like to sign it.

Well - yes - it's a brave move (although ridiculous that standing up for women is a brave move at a political event) but is no one else a bit disappointed that other than Joan and Joanna, there aren't any other high profile SNP women there? And it's not a great turnout. I've just heard they had to keep location secret - and disable locations on phones- because of fears of protests.

Not that heartening.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 13/10/2019 22:47

It's a start. I hope that more will join them, but this is more than any other political party has done so far, by a country mile.

My next vote will very much depend on how this plays out.

Is that by any chance the same event as this one?

twitter.com/holyroodmandy/status/1183447040782721031?s=19
"At an invitation only fringe event about women’s equality where we are asked to disable our location on Twitter because of safety fears #womenspledge"

ScrimshawTheSecond · 13/10/2019 23:02

Yep, I think so.

That's horrifying that they have to take such precautions. I'm fairly certain that Out4Indy don't have the same issue...

Nope. Several photos on Twitter of SNP MPs and MSPs proudly wearing their Transwomen are Women badges courtesy of the Out4Indy stall.

I despair. It will be interesting to see how the elections for the party positions pan out. I'm beginning to lose hope.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 14/10/2019 18:59

And an article in the Guardian:

Bloody hell, how did that get by the guardian TRAs? It's actually a pretty fair and balanced article Shock

Afrojules · 15/10/2019 07:56

If anyone would like to support the pledge, you can sign it online. You don’t need to be a supporter of the SNP to sign. It would be great if anyone who would like to show support for the aims of the group would add their name.

All you have to do is send an email with your name to the one on the link. No postcode or address required. Thanks in advance to anyone who does so. The Scottish Government have continuously ignored women’s voices so seeing Joan, Joanna and other women in the party put themselves in the firing line like this, I just want to help get their message out there. Like I said, this is about women’s rights, not support for the SNP.

This tweet links to the pledge. Thanks everyone Flowers

Yes - and it is good to see. Partly I think its because they are in government - as such they are actually doing things rather than just talking about them( Introduce 'international best practice' for example ) - that's helped concentrate minds and provok a reaction.
Tories started down this road a couple of years back, then beat a retreat when they realised what a howling mess self Id is . Suspect Labour will only really see a significant engagement ( and resistance) when looking at the detail becomes unavoidable.

Afrojules · 15/10/2019 09:47

Thanks, Olly. Apologies for the Twitter link. And thanks to anyone who adds their name.

OllyBJolly · 15/10/2019 11:01

It was interesting to hear Joanna Cherry say that the SNP has to have a look at how it "does" government, suggesting that the proper processes and consultation were not undertaken. And she's spot on.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 15/10/2019 11:24

Ten away from 2,000.

I'm not an SNP member, but I think that anyone who supports the aims of this pledge can sign.

I gave up my snp membership when they threw women under the bus

ScrimshawTheSecond · 15/10/2019 15:47

'Rhiannon Spear, who backed the Out For Independence pledge, is new Women's Convener. She beat Colette Walker, who backed the Women's Pledge, by 412 to 380'

Well, then, SNP. You've made your bed.

OP posts:

Thanks to all those women.
Have signed the petition.

Same.

They certainly have. So disappointing.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 15/10/2019 17:25

I would hope that Ms Spear will note that the vote was relatively close, and understand that a very large proportion of SNP supporters care about womens' rights and are worried about Self ID and wish to discuss it. But I'll not hold my breath.

"This is alarming & important. A young Woman who attended the inaugural @WomensPledge meeting this week, is now being targeted online by extreme trans rights activists.

For speaking out against this I’m now blocked by @outforindy.

When will this stop? t.co/wlLTvBmFs0 "
