www.theguardian.com/society/2019/oct/07/innout-trans-woman-harassment-california

No comments allowed of course. No empathy for the women frightened and threatened by a large male person in their space. A misleading cartoon picturing a woman who in no way resembles said large male person.

They also have a piece this week about how empowering Japanese rope bondage is. I shouldn't even click on the paper any moreAngry

The law says this person can use the toilet of their chosen gender. However, this person cannot control how other people see them. I have no doubt that racism was a factor in this, and that's just shit. It also sounds unpleasant to be stared at while on the toilet. This person does in fact have legal and practical access to both male and female toilets, unlike the person who made the complaint. If using the male toilet makes these incidents less likely to occur, I wonder if they would consider doing that? Life might be significantly better. I certainly used to use the men's toilet in the interests of not pissing myself in the ladies queue, though I have now stopped doing this in the understanding that men deserve privacy too.

How was any woman frightened and threatened in the account of events given?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/10/2019 09:04

And behold, the woman who complained to the manager vanishes in a puff of Woke Smoke.

pachyderm · 08/10/2019 09:20

Tonerre the management had received several reports of a man in the women's toilets. I would complain too, not because I'm a big meanie bigot but because experience has taught me constant vigilance as well as a desire to protect younger women who might not be as assertive. Men are a threat.

Because they left the toilets in a state of fear and went to complain to the manager.

You seemed to need it spelling out - HTH.

I would rather challenge 100 trans women “just trying to pee” than allow my DDs in the same toilets as someone like Katie Dolatowski:

When are TRAs going to tell us how we are meant to tell the difference between the two?

"After this terrible 30 second, non violent, experience, the poor oppressed person could not work in any shape or form, and needs you to pay them all your money"
....
And while I have no wish to belittle anyone's suffering, it seems to me that this 'harassment' is less threatening than the usual shit from men that women are used to putting up with

Quite - in everyday hassle news, women everywhere recall how they had to sit an exam/go through a job interview/participate in a vital meeting straight after an incident while walking there where they were being followed and surrounded/intimidated by a large group of young men and it could all have gone horribly wrong.

I wish a harassment-free life for all of us. Like others, I do sometimes wonder what some people's understanding of harassment is.

"its British readership is not responding well to the ever present begging bowl"

I would only give money if it was a proper membership scheme where the members had a say in running the paper

Correct me if I am wrong but the Guardian hasn't said much about the Old Vic toilets - a feminist protest in a London theatre? Can you get more Guardinista than that? - but we're supposed to care about some random trans woman in California?

PhonicTheHedgehog · 08/10/2019 11:44

I felt she was trying to look at my genitals, attempting to determine my gender

I’m confused by this sentance. I thought there was no match between gender and genitals?

It does sound an awful thing to go through. I wonder how this could have been avoided...?

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 08/10/2019 12:02

I felt she was trying to look at my genitals, attempting to determine my gender

Again with the genital obsession and projecting it onto others.

I'm 45 years old, I started working with the public aged 14. I must have met thousands upon thousands of people over the years and in all that time never once have I felt the need to see an adult someone's genitals in order to ascertain their sex, no matter how they were dressed.

It might be difficult to tell in small children, but adults? Even kids approaching puberty? Nope. Dead easy. No one was looking at your genitals, mate. No one needs to. We can all tell your sex from your face, hands, shoulders, hips, walk, talk, smell.

"its British readership is not responding well to the ever present begging bowl"

I pay to read the Times. I've been paying to read it since Speaker's Corner.

Because they've stuck their neck out for women, they publish great feminist content and I'm happy to support them.

The Guardian, on the other hand, prove over & over again that they don't give a flying fuck about us.

Germ1360 · 08/10/2019 14:35

"the company declined to make the manager available for an interview". Good, if they'd have done that they'd have been throwing her under the bus, she'd probably have had death threats.

Also, the bit about just wanting to pee "without you kicking the door in and dragging us out". That didn't happen to you, though, did it. Arrrgh.

And lol at lafemme bear wanting to be judged on talent rather than tokenized as a black transwoman. Yeah, the way to do that is definitely to have an article centering on your identity as a black transwoman. And keep referring to yourself as such.

TLDR: ‘Staff member does job as tasked, overly sensitive person tries to make cash out of being offended’
